Job Description


The MDL is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Research Associate with a proven track record in pathogen surveillance and extensive expertise in medically important infectious diseases. The successful candidate will have demonstrated training and experience in various aspects of infectious disease research, teaching, and molecular diagnostics development. The ideal candidate will be passionate about infectious disease research and surveillance, with a desire to make significant contributions to public health through the advancement of diagnostic tools and pathogen surveillance efforts.

Responsibilities include: i) lead the development and execution of pathogen genomic surveillance programs ensuring the detection of target microbes by molecular diagnostic assays, ii) conduct genomic sequencing and analysis of clinical specimens, develop bioinformatic tools for the analysis of publicly available and internally derived sequences, and perform phylogenetic analysis of target pathogens, iii) generate reports for internal and external reviews and contribute to scientific publications, iv) effectively overseeing complex research projects from inception to completion, v) provide leadership and guidance to a team of technicians, and vi) effectively communicate research findings, project updates, and strategic plans to stakeholders, collaborators, and the scientific community.


Required Qualifications

• PhD or equivalent degree in microbiology, bioinformatics, infectious disease, molecular biology or a related field
• Demonstrated knowledge and experience in medically important infectious diseases, with a focus on surveillance and molecular diagnostics development
• Ability to set and manage multiple priorities simultaneously
• Demonstrated experience in the development and execution of pathogen genomic surveillance programs
• Proven track record in project management, with the ability to effectively lead multidisciplinary teams and prioritize tasks
• Strong leadership skills and team building
• Excellent communication skills
• Proficiency in data analysis and interpretation, with demonstrated experience in genomic sequencing, bioinformatics, and phylogenetic analysis
• Ability to work effectively and collegially with colleagues
• Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality and professionalism
