Senior Research Associate (Transgenic Mouse Group)

Berkeley Lab’s (LBNL ) Environmental Genomics and Systems Biology (EGSB ) Division has an opening for a Senior Research Associate to join the Transgenic Mouse Group. 

 

In this exciting role, you will perform various research assignments to support the molecular biology and transgenic mouse work as part of several projects aimed at understanding how mammalian gene expression is regulated. You will work with live mice, mouse tissue samples, and perform animal microdissection. You will assist with preliminary analysis of experimental results, generate reports, and present findings at group meetings.

 

This position has an anticipated start date of April 15, 2024.

 

What You Will Do:

  • Provide support to the transgenic mouse facility, including but not limited to general animal husbandry, intraperitoneal injections of hormones, embryo production, egg collection, microdissection, identification of pseudo-pregnant recipient females, maintenance of mouse colonies, genomic DNA isolation for genotyping of transgenic lines, and euthanasia.
  • Provide general support to molecular biology labs including but not limited to dishwashing, autoclaving of glassware, routine maintenance of lab equipment, buffer production, and supply inventory.
  • Perform various molecular biology techniques such as PCR, vector ligation, bacterial transformation, small- and large-scale plasmid preps, restriction enzyme digest, and gel electrophoresis. 
  • Perform preliminary analysis of experimental results, generate reports, and present findings. 
  • Maintain careful records of all experiments performed.
  • Meet regularly with supervisor and other team members to discuss project progress and provide recommendations to improve the experimental pipeline.
  • Perform occasional weekend work.

 

What is Required:

  • A Bachelor’s Degree (or equivalent knowledge/training) in Biology, Molecular Biology, Neuroscience, or a related field and a minimum of 2 years of relevant hands-on experience with mouse animal husbandry and handling of live rodents or an equivalent combination of education and experience. 
  • Experience with molecular biology techniques including PCR, bacterial transformation, small and large scale DNA purification, restriction digest, and gel electrophoresis.
  • Demonstrated computer skills including experience with software programs such as MS Office Suite, Google Applications Suite, and the ability to use a Mac or PC. 
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills including the ability to organize and accurately document research results and maintain laboratory records. 
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills including the ability to collaborate with a diverse staff of scientific and technical specialists within a collaborative interdisciplinary team environment.

 

Desired Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated ability to learn new laboratory protocols and technologies.
  • Experience serving as a technical resource.

  • This is a full time, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay, 13 month (benefits eligible), Term appointment with the possibility of extension or conversion to Career appointment based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds, and ongoing operational needs.
  • This position is expected to pay $64,056 - $81,600 per year for job code 381.2, which fits within the full salary range of $64,056 - $99,132 per year. Salary for this position will be commensurate with the final candidate’s qualifications and experience, including skills, knowledge, relevant education, certifications, plus also aligned with the internal peer group. 
  • This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.
