The International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP)  is an international research collaboration that coordinates seagoing expeditions  to study the history of the Earth recorded in sediments and rocks beneath the ocean floor. The JOIDES Resolution Science Operator (JRSO) operates the scientific drillship JOIDES Resolution  on behalf of the National Science Foundation. Specifically this Senior Data Analyst will analyze, interpret and verify data; design data modeling or provide analysis services; analyze quantitative and qualitative data using accepted statistical methods and qualitative research methods. Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience

  • Four years of related experience in data collection and analysis and using data management information systems

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others

  • Ability to work independently

  • Ability to write software for analyzing data

  • Knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications

  • Demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills

Other Requirements:

  • The employee in this position may seldom sail to become more familiar with data collected in shipboard laboratories and to promote communication with the technicians who collect the data

  • Seagoing employees must pass a physical exam

  • Obtain and hold a passport and appropriate visas on an as-needed basis

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Master’s degree in applicable field or equivalent combination of education and experience

  • Prior experience with IODP data

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of and experience with SQL programming

  • Background in the geological and/or oceanographic sciences

  • Knowledge of scientific software

Responsibilities:

Data Analysis and Verification

  • Designs data modeling/analysis services to mine systems and applications; builds, deploys and maintains data support tools; and maintains metadata inventories and definitions for database file/table creation

  • Uses tools for data analysis and interpretation

  • Analyzes, interprets, and verifies data, both from quantitative and qualitative analyses, using accepted statistical methods and qualitative research methods

  • Develops and performs needed assessments to identify problematic data, make corrections, and eliminate causes of data problems

Data Management and Archiving

  • Prepares data for submission to national data repositories and to an open-access repository

  • Prepares, maintains, and presents historical and comparative data

  • Responds to requests for information and prepares ad-hoc reports and query analyses in desired formats

  • Serves as a liaison with regards to data information needs

  • Maintains documentation of the methods and the standard operating procedures used in analyzing, verifying, correcting, and preparing data

Data Compliance

  • Complies with system, college, and department data policies

  • Provides training to users on data management systems, collection of information, and resource development applications

  • Performs other duties as assigned
