Job Description Summary:
The Senior Research Associate reports to the Director of the Mass Spec and Proteomics Core to execute the daily functions of the facility enabling high level proteomics, metabolomics, and lipidomics research in human health and disease at KUMC. This position will be responsible for collaborating with scientists and researchers on the KUMC campus to prepare samples for multiomics analysis.
Job Description:

Required Qualifications

Education: Master’s degree in chemistry, biochemistry, or closely related field.

Work Experience:

  • 3 - 5 years of previously laboratory experience using biochemical and molecular sample preparation protocols to isolate proteins or small molecules from complex biological matrices (or PhD and only 1 year of experience.)

  • Successful publication history in peer reviewed journals. 

  • Excellent communication as evidenced by application materials.

  • Experience with record keeping.

Preferred Qualifications

Education: Ph.D. degree in chemistry, biochemistry, or closely related field.

Work Experience:

  • Laboratory experience in a collaborative scientific environment.

  • Experience and expertise with method development for proteomics workflows.

  • Experience with preparing samples for metabolomics or lipidomics.

  • Experience running, troubleshooting, and repairing high end LC-MS systems with assistance from Director or vendor support.

Skills:

  • Strong work ethic, reliable, highly organized, affable, resourceful, and a desire to learn


Job Duties Outlined:

  • Prepare samples for multiomics mass spectrometry analysis on the Bruker timsTOF HT mass spectrometer equipped with a nanoElute 2 or Elute liquid chromatography system.

  • Implement protocols from literature and desire to develop/optimize methods for multiomics sample preparation and analysis.

  • Work independently and manage time to optimize sample preparation and minimize downtime.

  • Responsible for keeping exceptional records so each sample analyzed is clearly linked to a project from a collaborating laboratory. 

  • Participation in generation of final reports to be provided to collaborating scientists. Prepare tables and figures for manuscript and grant submission.

  • Interest in authoring or co-authoring bioanalytical method development publications to support the ongoing efforts of the Core facility.

  • Communicate with collaborators and Core Director.

  • General lab maintenance.

  • Maintain a current Laboratory Notebook, documenting all calculations, work, experiments, and other pertinent research information.

  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the Core Director.

  • Compliance: Attend and maintain compliance on all orientation and training sessions designated by the University and the Mass Spec and Proteomics Core, understand and follow biosafety protocols, and attend regular lab meetings.

Compensation Statement:

The pay range listed for this position is determined by our compensation program using market data and salary benchmarking. A combination of factors is considered in making compensation decisions including, but not limited to, education, experience and training, qualifications relative to the requirements of the position, and funding. At the University of Kansas Medical Center, a reasonable estimate for the starting pay range will be the minimum to midpoint of the posted range, taking into account the combination of factors listed above.
