Berkeley Lab’s (LBNL ) Joint Genome Institute (JGI ) is looking for a Senior Research Associate to join the Genome Technologies Group.

In this role, you will perform production and research assignments, preliminary data analysis and interpretation related to various technology in Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) library construction and tasks necessary to meet the goals of the large-scale genome, transcriptome, and epigenome characterization effort. Tasks involve sample management, evaluation of sample quality, library construction, library quality evaluation and submission using LIMS systems. You will be responsible for understanding the latest sequencing technology, supporting new technology development, and integrating new protocols onto the JGI sequencing platforms. Additionally, you will interpret rolling quality control (rQC) reports, troubleshoot process failures, and participate in optimization of protocols. Emphasis will be placed on meeting the library production goals as well as conducting research and development (R&D) experiments.

The JGI ’s mission is to provide the global research community with access to the most advanced integrative genome science capabilities in support of the DOE”s research mission to solve the world’s evolving energy and environmental challenges. The JGI supports projects in genome sequencing, synthesis, transcriptomics, metabolomics, and natural products in plants, fungi, algae, and microorganisms. This position is headquartered on the Lab’s main site at the Integrative Genomics Building (IGB) (Virtual Tour ).

This position has an anticipated start date of May 20, 2024.

What You Will Do:

  • Create various types of libraries from samples (DNA, RNA, chromatin, or cell/nuclei) from JGI users’ including prokaryote, eukaryotic organisms, and environmental samples.
  • Understand and interpret QC results and implement modifications.
  • Follow up with accurate data entry into the LIMS system.
  • Interpret rQC reports to evaluate library quality and identify failure and propose solutions.
  • Design and perform experiments, summarize results, and provide conclusions on R&D projects.
  • Understand general library development issues relating to production needs, identify areas of improvement, and offer feedback.
  • Troubleshoot & optimize current library construction protocols to meet scientific research goals.
