Senior Research Associate

Berkeley Lab’s  (LBNL ) Molecular Biophysics and Integrated Bioimaging Division (MBIB ) has an opening for a Senior Research Associate to join the SIBYLS team and perform hands-on experiments in the field of Biochemistry and Biophysics.

 

In this role, you perform work primarily within the laboratory spaces at the Advanced Light Source , assisting in the preparation of cells and cellular products like proteins, DNA, RNA, and metabolites. You will assist Postdoctoral Fellows in synchrotron-based imaging experiments on biological samples and support efforts to improve the utilization of synchrotron techniques on biological samples in the realms of viral biology, cancer biology, bioremediation, bioenergetics, microbial metabolism, and plant metabolism.

 

This position has an anticipated start date of March 11, 2024.

 

What You Will Do:

  • Participate in the implementation and evaluation of experiments involving biological samples.
  • Support Postdoctoral Fellows in conducting X-ray scattering data collection using synchrotron radiation.
  • Assist in the validation of results, troubleshoot problem cases, and provide feedback to scientists on the progress of an experiment.
  • Assist with technical problems in data analysis.
  • Assist scientists in the collection of crystallographic, SAXS, X-ray tomography and other data on core mission samples.
  • Maintain an accurate and detailed online laboratory notebook of all experiments performed and provide sufficient details to ensure methods and results can be duplicated by others. 
  • Maintain a database of procedures, staff training, and startup issues.

 

What is Required:

  • Bachelor’s Degree (or equivalent knowledge/training) in Biology, Engineering, Physics or a related discipline and a minimum of 2 years of experience analyzing data, working with qualitative information, and carrying out routine biology assignments in a laboratory setting or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrated analytical skills including the ability to identify issues, problem solve, and recommend solutions.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills including experience maintaining detailed and accurate record-keeping of daily laboratory operations.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills including experience working with a diverse collaborative interdisciplinary team.

 

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with Python or web-application based coding.
  • Experience with DNA repair, protein engineering, or vaccine development.
  • Experience with synchrotron techniques.
  • Experience with developing research proposals that lead to continued funding in biological macromolecular characterization.

  • This is a full time, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay, 13 month (benefits eligible), Term appointment with the possibility of extension or conversion to Career appointment based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds, and ongoing operational needs.
  • This position is expected to pay $64,056 - $81,600 per year for job code 381.2, which fits within the full salary range of $64,056 - $99,132 per year. Salary for this position will be commensurate with the final candidate’s qualifications and experience, including skills, knowledge, relevant education, certifications, plus also aligned with the internal peer group. 
  • This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.
