The Cooperative Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Studies (CIMAS) of the University of Miami, Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric, and Earth Science (Rosenstiel) invites applicants for a full time Senior Research Associate I position. We seek an individual to join our Ocean Carbon Cycle group to support fieldwork collecting, analyzing, processing, and reporting on a variety of inorganic carbon samples collected on research cruises. The position will be located in Miami, FL.

The candidate is expected to develop under the guidance of more established scientists in the group and will perform tasks related to the acquisition and analyses of biogeochemical and inorganic carbon data, maintenance, and improvement of the instruments. They will also process samples and be involved in efforts to improve and document the protocols and methodology for sample analysis, data processing, and report writing.

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Installing, troubleshooting, maintaining, and calibrating oceanographic instrumentation on a variety of ships and in the lab.
  • Analyzing, processing and quality controlling samples collected on research cruises and/or sent to the lab, and submitting quality controlled data and metadata to a variety of repositories.
  • Participation in research cruises (from 25 to 60 days in duration)
  • Visiting ships in port to install, troubleshoot and maintain instrumentation, including occasional work on weekends

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Applicants must have a Master of Science degree or equivalent experience in engineering, marine studies, oceanography, chemistry, or related fields and some research experience.
  • Experience with troubleshooting, interfacing and maintaining oceanographic equipment is highly desirable.
  • Necessary skills include the ability to handle multiple tasks and responsibilities, time management, and work under guidance of a collaborative and diverse team. The ability to work and collaborate in a diverse group setting is essential.
  • Problem solving and critical thinking skills, good organizational skills, and the ability and availability to assist and support fieldwork trips.
  • Being meticulous with attention to detail and willingness to follow established best practices of analyses
  • Good working knowledge of Microsoft Excel is required.
  • Experience with commonly used software and protocols in the oceanographic community such as NetCDF, Ocean DataView, MatLab/python/LabView or other programming languages. 
  • Basic knowledge of mechanics, computer interfacing and electronics.

The position is located at the NOAA Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory's Ocean Chemistry and Ecosystem Division in Miami, FL.
