Position Summary
Institutional Research & Analysis is a key functional unit of the Institutional Effectiveness team within the Office of the Provost. It supports the university’s senior leadership through the collection, analysis, and reporting of data on issues of institutional importance. We are seeking a Senior Reporting Analyst to be a key contributor and collaborator to disseminating important institutional data to diverse audiences and executing external reporting as required by federal, state, and other agencies, higher education consortia, and rankings agencies.
Working closely with the Director of Institutional Research and Analysis, the Senior Reporting Analyst will serve as lead analyst and keyholder for reporting Washington University data in federal reporting, state reporting, reporting to consortia, and reporting to rankings organizations. As the central convener of complex reporting tasks, this position will establish and maintain relationships with a broad set of data preparers across various Washington University units. The position is also expected to collaborate with the rest of the Institutional Effectiveness team to plan and execute a strong program of data acquisition, cleaning, maintenance, documentation, sharing, and use. They will also support the implementation of our institutional survey strategy in partnership with the Director.
The Senior Reporting Analyst will be responsible for maintaining a deep understanding of the university context and external data definitions and requirements. They will advise the Institutional Effectiveness team and data owners elsewhere in the university about consequences of changes to definitions, storage, and reporting of data.


Job Description

Primary Duties & Responsibilities


  • Collaborate with partners to complete external surveys accurately, appropriately, and on time. Understand regulations, reporting instructions, definitions, uses, and timelines for federal reporting including IPEDS, consortia, rankings agencies, and reporting in Washington University’s Common Data Set (CDS). Stay up-to-date on changes to reporting for existing destinations and new reporting requirements and opportunities.
  • Plan and manage data acquisition, evaluation, and submission for multiple reporting destinations. Plan internal checks to assure timely submission of compliance reporting. Plan and facilitate meetings, including materials preparation, post-meeting summaries, and implement decisions and assignments.
  • Identify issues and concerns in institutional data. Collaborate with colleagues to understand issues that arise and nominate solutions. Be aware of how data is collected and stored in WashU central data systems, and how it maps to reporting requirements. Extract, clean, maintain, manipulate, and share institutional data as needed. Document all data acquisition, cleaning, and reporting processes, procedures, and decisions.
  • Monitor key rankings announcements and the changing rankings environment. Analyze and report on key rankings, including consequences for WashU of changed ranking methodologies, ranking change over time, and comparisons to peers. Provide recommendations to inform WashU’s participation in different ranking entities.
  • Working with the Director of Institutional Research and Analysis and other IR&A colleagues, plan and implement institutional surveys. Manage survey administration logistics, including participant recruitment, data collection, and data validation. Implement appropriate quality control measures to ensure the accuracy and reliability of survey data. Conduct analysis and reporting activities as determined by the survey approach in collaboration with the director. Interpret survey findings, identify trends, and provide actionable insights. Contribute to the development of dissemination products for various stakeholder audiences.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree or higher in a social science, business, statistics, or related field. Strong preference for experience reporting to IPEDS. Seven or more years in institutional research in higher education.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of data cleaning, analysis, and reporting.
  • Demonstrated skills in project management and process improvement.
  • Extensive experience with spreadsheet software, including skill with formulas and pivot tables.
  • Ability to work independently and proactively, with minimal supervision, to meet established deadlines.
  • Demonstrated leadership qualities such as conflict/issue resolution.
  • Ability to adjust to changes in priorities and demands on time.
  • Excellent communication skills; able to convey complex information with clarity and brevity.
  • Significant ingenuity and flexibility.
  • Capacity to manage complicated reporting projects.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to make positive contributions to team success: to provide and receive constructive feedback, to follow established team practices/guidelines for workflows, documentation, and deliverables, and to actively participate in fostering a positive, supportive work environment.


Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Five years of related experience in college or university institutional research, including experience with external reporting and analyzing institutional data.

Salary Range
$64,700.00 - $110,500.00 / Annually

The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
