Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Senior Public Relations Specialist, Marketing Communications for the University Finance and Administration Communications department. The position will support planning, execution, and measurement of the department’s communication strategies. The position reports to the Communications Director for University Finance and Administration (UFA). The person who fills this role is responsible for designing and managing standards and content for UFA websites, social media platforms, publications, and the division’s intranet. The position has oversight of the execution of a high-profile UFA marketing communications plan, ensuring efficient and effective access to data and information for diverse internal and external audiences. This position curates, writes, and edits copy and collateral that clearly convey key messages to raise awareness, deepen understanding, and increase engagement and adoption among UFA staff, members of the university community, and external audiences. The position will fulfill the responsibilities of this role by adhering to the UFA Communications core values – lead with integrity, embrace innovation, welcome collaboration, make the connection, champion diversity, and discover something new. They also will be an advocate for UFA’s culture, which is rooted in the division’s guiding principles of support and collaboration, understanding and trust, how we work, strategic alignment, and accountability.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
  • Develops and executes a strategic and integrated approach to design and manage content for digital assets and publications to promote the division’s core purpose and services
  • Leads efforts to ensure strong and consistent branding and user experience throughout the UFA communications ecosystem to tell a cohesive narrative
  • Develops and manages standards and consistent, on-brand content for UFA websites and social media platforms, and the division’s intranet; advocate for digital best practices and use of design elements to create effective, engaging user experiences
  • Leads the creation of innovative graphic, visual, and audio content for digital campaigns, events, publications, initiatives and projects
  • Researches, writes, fact checks, edits, and curates original, compelling stories of UFA people, culture, core purpose, and guiding principles that can be adapted across multiple platforms, including web, intranet, publications, social media, and video; produce copy that is engaging, brand-compliant and search engine-optimized. 
  • Works collaboratively with University Finance and Administration department heads and staff on the development and delivery of digital marketing strategies that convey key messages, raise awareness, deepen understanding, and increase engagement and adoption among members of the university community as well as external stakeholders. 
  • Provides direction on and have oversight of relevant digital marketing activities managed by internal and external partners who support universitywide/division initiatives and projects led by University Finance and Administration departments.
  • Assesses and execute existing, new, and emerging digital communication channels and opportunities for compatibility with universitywide/division initiatives and projects.
  • Leverages and build on expertise to drive decision making on how to engage and expand our audiences through tracking and analysis of data, analytics, and key performance indicators; gauge the effectiveness of communication activities, including the assessment, development, and application of appropriate metrics to measure impact.
  • Serves as a representative of the UFA Communications department on committees pertaining to the department’s core functions, as well as the division’s culture and/or diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Arranges interviews, photo and video shoots; edit and publish deliverables.
  • Effectively manages feedback and input from diverse groups of stakeholders to reach decisions on best path forward to implement plans.
  • Supports event management activities for universitywide and division meetings, department staff meetings (ad hoc) and other UFA virtual, in-person, and hybrid events.
  • Provides supervision and/or oversight of work product for junior and student team members, as needed.

Minimum Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in marketing communication, new/digital media, English or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience that demonstrates comprehensive knowledge, skill, and understanding of graphic design and branding, web development, content management, writing, publishing, and marketing.
  • A minimum of five years of relevant experience in a digital marketing, design, and/or communications function.

  • Thorough knowledge of MS Office as well as platforms that support web and intranet development, content management, social media, publications, marketing communications, and event management, including Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop), Prezi, YouTube, Constant Contact, Eventbrite, SharePoint, Qualtrics, Drupal, WordPress, Hootsuite, and Mentimeter. 
  • Demonstrated capability to write, edit, and proofread high-quality copy applying standard published style guides such as The Chicago Manual of Style or The Associated Press Stylebook and the Rutgers Editorial Style Guide; maintain high publication standards, ensuring consistency and quality of messaging for all content.
  • Completes work independently, proactively, and collaboratively, with broadly defined objectives and limited review of overall results.
  • Exhibits strong attention to detail, is highly organized, responsive, and dependable.
  • Has strong problem solving, decision making, and project management skills, capable of hands-on execution of program deliverables,

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working in a higher education setting is a plus.
  • Prior experience having oversight of others is helpful.
