Position Summary
This staff position oversees and coordinates the implementation of complex, multiple and multi-site health services research studies; serves as a resource to provide comprehensive information and assistance to research staff and faculty investigators; serves as a liaison with various departments within the University, including the Institutional Review Board, as well as funding agencies such as the National Institutes of Health and data providers/partners such as the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services; responsible for managing all phases of the study protocol; may supervise other research staff.


Job Description

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Designs and manages the implementation of all phases of a study/protocol; ensures compliance with protocol guidelines, data use agreements, and requirements of regulatory and funding agencies; establishes record-keeping systems; records results and data into study databases; and identifies problems and/or inconsistencies.
  • Routinely ensures timely completion of all study protocol requirements and tracks study timeline and resources.
  • Manages, validates, and interprets study data; performs more complex statistical analysis of data independently in conjunction with the Investigator; confers with Investigator regarding interpretation of results and makes suggestions for modification of study design as necessary.
  • Prepares oral and written presentation/reports outlining research progress, recommendations and/or conclusions for University, local and/or national scientific meetings. Sets agendas for staff meetings and maintains record of meeting minutes.
  • Conducts literature reviews of journal articles, abstracts and scientific literature.
  • May draft some sections of manuscripts and grant applications under the guidance of the Investigator.
  • Serves as primary liaison to Investigator in funding searches, development of funded research projects, and interactions with coinvestigators and research partners at other institutions.
  • Responsible for the creation and formatting of data tables, figures, and graphics and the formatting of manuscripts and reports; data collection, entry and analysis; may design, develop and manage study database.
  • Manages the Institutional Review Board (HRPO) and external data use agreement submission and approval process, assists in preparation of amendments to protocols and/or modifications to study design as necessary; serves as liaison with HRPO, data use agreement partners (e.g., the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services) and funding or sponsoring agency (e.g., the National Institutes of Health).
  • Provides guidance to members of research team in the implementation and evaluation of research; trains new staff; may serve as lead or as point of reference for other public health research techs; may be responsible for staff scheduling (assign and monitor tasks) and provide input on staff performance.
  • Maintains study equipment and software updates. May approve research expenditures and assist Investigator with financial management of project funds.
  • Provides support of other study activities as needed.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in a health services research or related field, such as health policy, economics, public health or policy, epidemiology, or analytics, plus two years of work experience in the above fields.
  • Experience and training in quantitative analysis, data management, and programming in statistical software such as SAS, Stata, and R Studio.
  • Strong writing and communication skills.
  • Knowledge of the U.S. health care system, including Medicare and Medicaid.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and to maintain complete and organized records/reports.
  • Working knowledge of computer software.
  • Data management and analytic skills, particularly experience managing or analyzing large data sets.
  • Demonstrated communication and interpersonal skills.


Required Qualifications

Master’s degree in a health or research related field with two years of relevant research experience obtained through practicum or employment; a combination of relevant work and education equaling eight years may substitute for this requirement.

Salary Range
$50,600.00 - $75,800.00 / Annually

The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
