Position Summary

This position will be part of the Clinical and Translational Project Development (CTPD) Core of the Hematologic Malignancies Research Institute (HMRI). This Core supports scientific coordination and management, scientific writing and clinical protocol development for the Hem Institute. Each Project Development Scientist will support specific HMRI investigators and will work closely with the Disease/Modality Team leaders, laboratory and clinical researchers, and biostatisticians to advance the clinical and translational research goals and priorities of the affiliated investigators.

Essential Functions

·         Develop in-depth knowledge of program goals and scientific areas of emphasis

·         Assist investigators with management of programmatic initiatives and goals, e.g. multi-project grant submission/management, donor proposals, website updates, press releases

·         Facilitate team interactions for project development

·         Assist with identification of funding opportunities, grant writing and submission

·         Coordinate clinical trial design, writing and submission and amendment of clinical protocols

·         Oversee clinical and translational projects through regulatory submissions, including FDA Investigational New Drug Applications (IND)

·         Oversee operational aspects of trial activation, and ongoing trouble-shooting and regulatory reporting

·         Organize manuscript writing, data presentation and journal submission

·         Work with investigators to assure the clarity and accuracy of data presentations, as well as the interpretation of results.


Basic education, experience and skills required for consideration:

·         The Staff Scientist must possess, at a minimum, the U.S. equivalent Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in an appropriate discipline, and will often have a Ph.D. or other doctoral level degree. PhD preferred with a background within Biology, Biochemistry or other Life Sciences

·         At least 5 years of experience in experimental design, scientific writing, clinical study design, or clinical trial regulatory experience in a healthcare/research/academic environment.

·         At least 3 years of experience as a Project Development Scientist at City of Hope, or equivalent role is preferred.

·         Experience with NIH or DOD research grant writing, involvement with therapeutic clinical trials, protocol design/writing for therapeutic clinical trials. Familiarity with data analysis techniques, graphing methods, and interpretation of laboratory and clinical data is preferred.

·         Strong written and verbal English is required.
