Nature of Work

The senior flow cytometry specialist will be part of the staff of the Cancer Center Flow Cytometry Shared Resource, a campus service center which provides flow and mass cytometric cell analysis and cell sorting technology to campus researchers. This is a full-time position in the Flow Cytometry Shared Resource of the University of the Colorado Cancer Center.

Examples of Work Performed

  • Oversight and coordination of cell sorting services across multiple cell sorters, research projects and staff members.
  • Maintenance, repair, troubleshooting and operation of high-speed, multi-laser cell sorters.Maintenance, repair, troubleshooting and operation of bench-top flow cytometers for cell analysis consisting of data collection, analysis, and preparation of graphics for data display. Assays are frequently complex in nature, consisting of 20+ fluorochromes which require compensation/spectral unmixing for multiple spectral overlaps and intricate gating criteria.
  • Cell sorting including selection of instrument operating parameters and troubleshooting of experimental details to obtain maximum purity and yield.
  • Operation, maintenance, troubleshooting of the Helios mass cytometer.
  • Consultation with customers on the design of complex, multi-parameter flow and mass cytometric analysis and sorting experiments.
  • Perform both general and project-specific quality control procedures to ensure instrument performance for research projects. This includes troubleshooting and interaction with field service engineers for instrument repairs.
  • Shared resource equipment scheduling, usage tracking, and billing.
  • Advanced software analysis for graphics presentation and data interpretation for publications.
  • Computer setup, maintenance, and networking for laboratory equipment and desktop computers.
  • Teaching basic flow cytometry skills in monthly course for faculty and staff.
  • Participate in the development and testing of commercial flow cytometry equipment and software in accordance with University-approved external vendor testing contracts.
  • Work involves hazardous chemicals, handling viable human cells, biological substances, and laser beams.
  • Advanced training in the form of attendance at sophisticated training workshops or conference participation is required.

 

Salary and Benefits:

Salary is expected to be between $57,000-$75,000 and is commensurate with skills and expereince.

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.

Qualifications

 

 

Minimum Requirements

Education: A Master’s degree in biology, chemistry, physics, bioengineering, medical technology, business or any related field (a combination of education and experience may be substituted).

 

Experience: Seven (7) years of experience in flow cytometry, preferably in a large core facility.

Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

Desired Qualifications

  • Medical Technologist or Medical Laboratory Scientist, (ASCP) or MBA
  • Previous flow cytometry experience working in both academia and industry
  • Ten (10) years of flow cytometry experience

 

Required Competence/Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

This position requires sophisticated knowledge of all areas of flow cytometry. A thorough knowledge of current multi-parameter flow and mass cytometry, and cell sorting is necessary.  The candidate must have excellent communication skills and the ability to interact with many different groups of researchers. The ability to prioritize tasks and modify the work schedule as needed is essential.
