Job Summary
 

The senior production editor initiates and monitors the work of freelance copyeditors, proofreaders, and indexers, as well as full-service editing vendors, on book-length scholarly manuscripts and ensures their use of the professional principles and methods set forth in The Chicago Manual of Style.

Responsibilities

  • Takes responsibility for all manuscript components (text, tables, notes, reference lists, appendixes, illustration captions, and indexes).
  • Determines the level of copy editing a manuscript requires.
  • Establishes copy editing schedules.
  • Initiates and monitors the work of freelance editors, proofreaders, indexers, as well as full-service editing vendors, and ensures their use of the professional principles and methods set forth in The Chicago Manual of Style.
  • Codes and otherwise prepares copy edited manuscripts for typesetting (or oversees their coding and preparation).
  • Serves as liaison with authors and other Press staff during editing and proof stages.
  • Oversees all stages of proof to bound book.
  • Edits, proofreads, and checks jacket/cover copy and proofs.
  • May personally copy edit manuscripts as needed.
  • Collaborates with authors to resolve routine and moderate problems using existing procedures and to clarify meaning. Assists with quality control by proofreading edited manuscripts.
  • Coordinate all stages of manuscript editing and proof review up to the time the book is bound and edit and approve catalog and jacket materials with guidance from others.
  • Performs other related work as needed.


Minimum Qualifications
 

Education:

Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.

Preferred Qualifications

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Additional formal editorial training.

Experience:

  • Minimum of six years professional experience copy editing scholarly books or journals (newspaper or journalism experience does not qualify for this position).
  • Minimum of six years professional experience copy editing manuscripts using Microsoft Word’s Track Changes function.
  • Skilled at hiring and supervising offsite freelance editorial workers.
  • Working knowledge contracting and supervising full-service editing vendors.

Technical Skills or Knowledge:

  • Excellent command of American English grammar, spelling, punctuation, and syntax.
  • Demonstrated thorough knowledge of The Chicago Manual, 17th edition.
  • Complete knowledge of standard editing and proofreading marks.
  • Superior editorial judgment and skills, including the ability to edit using Microsoft Word’s Track Changes function.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Familiarity with other style manuals (e.g., MLA, APA).
  • Fluent in at least one language other than English.
