Senior Photographer -- Gies College of Business
Office of Marketing and Communications
Gies College of Business at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign is seeking applicants for a Senior Photographer to join our growing team of more than 20 marketing professionals. If hired, you will work closely with designers, writers, videographers, marketing managers, and others on a team that functions as an in-house marketing agency.

Job Summary
Perform artistic, creative, and skilled work to capture and reproduce images reflecting the full range of operations and activities at Gies College of Business. Photography will include facilities, student life, events, faculty and staff, student groups, alumni, and more.
Duties & Responsibilities

  • Photography/Editing
  • Manage schedule and assignment strategy.
  • Shoot high-quality digital images, as requested, to meet the College's needs for marketing, web, social media, and news coverage.
  • Prepare and edit photos for use in a variety of digital and print materials.
  • Scout locations, schedule, and make necessary arrangements for photography assignments.
  • Acquire and organize photo release forms for on-camera talent.
  • Managing Photography Database
  • Create and maintain an online photo database, ensuring correct classifications and image details.
  • Develop photo file naming conventions for ease of search.
  • Create a tagging system for where photos have been used, identify image versions, and archive older images no longer relevant or in use.
  • Utilize photography database tools.
  • Collaboration/Coordination
  • Collaborate with team lead/event coordinator or unit contact regarding the strategy/plan for the photography assignment.
  • Collaborate with design staff to develop a recognizable College photo style to serve as an element in Gies Business' visual identity.
  • Coordinate with the writing, web, video, and design staff to bring initiatives and creative items from conception to completion.
  • Ensure photographic work is done efficiently and in a way that reflects College priorities.
  • Coordinate the recruitment and oversight of freelance photographers, as needed.
  • Work with and oversee student workers, as needed.

Additional Physical Demands
Position may involve carrying, cleaning, climbing, crawling, driving, kneeling, lifting up to 50 pounds, pulling, pushing, reaching, sitting, squatting, stooping, bending, twisting, and grasping.
Minimum Qualifications
1. High school diploma or equivalent.
2. Any combination totaling five (5) years (60 months) from the following categories:
A. College course work in photography, digital manipulation and processing or a closely related field, as measured by the following conversion table or its proportional equivalent:
30 semester hours equals one (1) year (12 months)
Associate's Degree (60 semester hours) equals eighteen months (18 months)
90 semester hours equals two (2) years (24 months)
Bachelor's Degree (120 semester hours) equals three (3) years (36 months)
B. Progressively more responsible work experience in professional photographic work.
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in film/video production, photojournalism, communications, marketing, graphic design, or a closely related field to the position.
Experience in photo and/or video work in higher education.
Experience covering live events.
Experience with planning and producing photo/video shoots and completing all post-production processing.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Advanced technical and creative knowledge in DSLR pro-camera operation.
  • Advanced technical knowledge in photo editing and post-production editing.
  • Organizational skills and knowledge of photo database tools, such as PhotoShelter.
  • Advanced technical and creative knowledge of equipment, tools, and supplies used in the taking, processing, enhancing, and use of photographs and videos, including various cameras/lenses and types of lighting.
  • Ability to meet deadlines, work on multiple initiatives and projects simultaneously, plan ahead, and manage time effectively.
  • Advanced skills in industry standard software, preferably in Photoshop, Adobe Premier, and/or Final Cut software.
  • Treats confidential information with extreme care.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and make contact with both internal and external constituents and diverse populations.
  • Strong customer service orientation.
  • Ability to work in a team environment as well as work independently.
  • Passion for education and a genuine interest in promoting the College's mission.
  • Flexibility to work outside standard working hours.
Appointment Information
This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 3038 - Senior Photographer position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the close of the search. Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience, while also considering internal equity. The base salary for this position starts at $66,000. Position may work in a hybrid home/office environment as agreed upon by supervisor.
