Senior Network Engineer

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced professional focused on delivering cutting-edge network security solutions for the UVA’s academic networks.  The successful candidate will play a crucial role in designing, implementing, and maintaining robust network security solutions, utilizing industry-leading technology vendors and technologies. The ideal candidate will have multiple years of experience working with multiple technology vendors, methodologies, and approaches.  The candidate will report to the Director of Academic networks and will participate in daily operational needs as well as strategic projects such as ZTNA, SASe, Firewall RFP & modernization, and cloud networking and security implementations.

Key Responsibilities: 

·       Provide guidance, planning, descriptions, and presentations related to the implementation of Zero Trust technologies and methodologies

·       Collaborate with stakeholders, technical teams, and information security to understand network security requirements, objectives, and constraints.

·       Design and develop network security architectures, incorporating appropriate technologies, vendors, and methodologies.

·       Assess and analyze existing network infrastructures, identifying vulnerabilities, and recommending appropriate security solutions.

·       Provide technical expertise and guidance to stakeholders and internal teams on network security best practices, industry standards, and emerging trends.

·       Develop comprehensive documentation, including solution designs, implementation plans, and technical specifications.

·       In collaboration with other technical and information security teams, present and demonstrate network security solutions to a broad audience including executive levels.

·       Work closely with engineering teams to ensure successful implementation of network security solutions, providing guidance and troubleshooting as needed.

·       Stay up-to-date with the latest advancements in network security technologies, threats, and industry standards, and integrate this knowledge into solution designs.

·       Conduct periodic security audits and assessments to identify potential risks and vulnerabilities, recommending remediation measures.

·       Provide post-implementation support and assistance, troubleshooting complex network security issues and optimizing solution performance.

·       Provide cloud networking and SaaS expertise in terms of both connecting to and securing data

 

Required Skills: 

·       5+ years working with Palo Alto, Zscaler, Zero Trust, Fortinet, Cisco, Juniper or other firewalls and/or network security appliances.

·       Certification in at least one network security vendor’s solution set

·       5+ years demonstrated experience in troubleshooting a variety of network issues

·       3+ years working with AWS and Azure cloud networking environments

·       3+ years defining, maintaining, and implementing firewall policies and features in a complex hybrid cloud environment

·       Experience with ITIL processes; Incident, problem, change, & configuration

·       Excellent communication skills with the ability to convey complex topics into layman terms 

 

Additional Experience Desired: 

·       Zero Trust specific certifications

·       AWS and/or Azure specific network certifications

·       Firewall vendor certifications (Fortinet is a plus)

·       SDWAN Experience (Silverpeak) 

·       Experience with Juniper Routers and/or Aruba Switches
