The Senior Network Engineer provides engineering design and support for all aspects of OARnets statewide dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) IP/MPLS network. OARnet maintains and delivers services across the states 5,500-mile fiber-optic network backbone to support the connectivity relied upon every day by Ohios higher education, K-12 education, state and local government, public broadcasting, health care and research communities.

Responsibilities of the Senior Network Engineer include:

  • Conducts testing, configuration, and deployment of networking hardware and services. Troubleshoots complex network issues.

  • Interfaces with internal and external customers to facilitate network service deployment and problem resolution. Works in a team environment to evaluate networking equipment, protocols, and services.

  • Identifies and recommends changes in network infrastructure.

  • Leads interaction with partners to facilitate connectivity to statewide backbone. Evaluates new network products and technologies.

  • Maintains and evaluates network management applications. Identifies and reports network performance and utilization.

  • Sets a tone of professionalism in the engineering team that is consistent with organizational goals.

  • Mentors junior network staff.

Required to be available outside of business hours and in an on-call rotation for escalation support.

Required Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in a technical field or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • 6 years of experience working in a service provider network.

  • Expert-level experience with Juniper routing and switching in large-scale service provider IP/MPLS network.

  • Design and troubleshooting TCP/IP, IPv4, IPv6, MPLS, IS-IS, OSPF, BGP, MSDP, PIM, IGMP, RSVP, VRRP, and LDP protocols.

  • Python and shell scripting automation in a Unix environment.

  • Thorough understanding of modern forwarding and control plane architectures. Knowledge of wave division multiplexing concepts and components.

  • Strong oral and written communication skills.

Desired Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in an Engineering discipline or an advanced degree in a related technical field.

  • 8-12 years of experience working in a service provider network.

  • Substantial professional experience with network monitoring tools and protocols such as traceroute, ping, SNMP, NetFlow, and Nagios. Experience with network security protocols, algorithms, and implementations.

  • C, Python, and shell programming.

  • Expertise in troubleshooting and deploying multicast video.

  • Expert-level design and implementation experience with L3VPN, L2 Circuit, Traffic Engineering, and other MPLS applications. Significant Metro Ethernet deployment and troubleshooting experience.
