Summary:

The Senior Network and Unified Communications Engineer is a highly experienced member of a small high-performance team responsible for designing, implementing, and providing operational support of an advanced state of the art research network in one of the world’s premier Life Sciences Research Institutes.

The position requires an individual to maintain the local area network and the Cisco Unified Communication Manager and the Aruba Wireless LAN in support of administrative operations and scientific research. Additionally, the candidate will be required to stay current in emerging technologies and identifying cost-effective solutions to continually improve the quality and performance of network and network-enabled services. Finally, the candidate will provide backup support for the other members of the team and will be expected to respond to operational issues whenever they occur.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 

LAN and Wireless:

  • Primary management of the stability, integrity and efficient operation of the network and in-house information systems that support core organizational functions.

  • Provide highly skilled direct network-related technical support to in-house IT, administrative and scientific staff plus a constant stream of visitors.

  • Configure and deploy Arista and Brocade network switches.

  • Primary support of the Aruba Wireless Network including deployment of new access point, configure and upgrade wireless controller and work with Tech Support to troubleshoot end-user issues.

  • Maintain network cabling infrastructure and function as main point of contact for cabling contractors.

  • Work closely with the software development teams to ensure the network provides applications the performance they require.

  • Work closely with the UNIX/Storage and Desktop services teams to ensure they have the necessary network services.

Unified Communications:

  • Primary administrator of the Cisco Unified Communications platform.

  • Provision and deploy Cisco telephones.

  • Provide direct end-user support for Cisco telephones.

  • Create and maintain dial plan for endpoints and CUCM trunks.

  • Mentor and support junior team members on the Cisco Unified Communications Manager.

  • Analyze, troubleshoot and resolve VoIP communications failures and bottlenecks.

Monitor & Document:

  • Monitor and maintain all network activity, responding to personal analysis as well as automated alerts to prevent and/or minimize network disruptions. 

  • Documentation of the network and VoIP infrastructure.

  • Escalate repair of malfunctioning equipment to advanced support vendors and oversee repair request until it is completed by the vendor.

  • Utilize Cisco TMS and Extron GVE to monitor and maintain video conferencing units.

  • Assists in evaluating, recommending, and selecting VoIP equipment, services and vendors.

  • Maintain and update documentation of the VoIP computing environment.

Other Duties:

  • Serve as main point of contact to assist and coordinate with outside network providers to accomplish needed work in our facilities.

  • Assist security engineers in incident response incidents.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information technology, or related discipline (or equivalent education and experience).

  • Certifications: CCNA, CCNA Voice, CCNP Voice, CCNP Route and Switch or equivalent experience

Experience:

  • 8+ years of industry experience in a design and implementation of network devices.

  • 8 + Experience with Implementation and troubleshooting of Cisco VoIP solutions or equivalent.

  • Deep knowledge of routing protocols including and knowledge of Internet concepts and routing architecture.

  • Proven experience working with high performance network switches (Arista or other fabric switches).

Physical Requirements: 

Remaining in a normal seated or standing position for extended periods of time; reaching and grasping by extending hand(s) or arm(s); dexterity to manipulate objects with fingers, for example using a keyboard; communication skills using the spoken word; ability to see and hear within normal parameters; ability to move about workspace. The position requires mobility, including the ability to move materials weighing up to several pounds (such as a laptop computer or tablet).
