Position Summary
Provides leadership, consultation, and direction for compensation including staff, students, and faculty. Consults with customers and plans, develops, and implements new and revised compensation programs, policies, and procedures to be responsive to internal goals and competitive practices. Ensures through audits, various reports, and personal interactions that company compensation programs are consistently administered in compliance with company policies and government requirements/regulations.


Job Description

Primary Duties & Responsibilities


  • Leads a team of compensation professionals in servicing the need internally for compensation and rewards. Oversees and monitors the effectiveness of existing compensation policies, guidelines and procedures recommending plan revision as well as new plans that are cost-effective and consistent with compensation trends and University objectives; coordinates implementation and provides guidance to various staff, faculty and others.
  • Provides advice to various leaders on pay decisions, policy and guideline interpretation, and job evaluations, including the design of creative solutions to specific compensation-related programs. Conducts job evaluations, market reviews and internal alignment reviews for customer groups.
  • Oversees the administration of direct compensation (executive, exempt and nonexempt cash compensation programs) for corporate staff, including the processing, recording and reporting of compensation-related actions related to the different type of University employees.
  • Leads the contingent worker classifications that includes a team devoted to receiving, documenting, approving and submitting for various non-appointee roles throughout the School of medicine as well as opportunities for non-employees on the Danforth campus. Oversees independent contractor status.
  • Develops techniques for compiling, preparing and presenting data. Provides reports and data analysis as needed.
  • Keeps apprised of federal, state and local compensation laws and regulations to ensure company compliance. May research certain areas of concentration or topics.
  • Supervises the participation in, conducts and/or purchases exempt and nonexempt salary surveys to ensure corporate compensation objectives are achieved.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master of Business Administration.
  • World at Work Certified Compensation Professional (CCP) / Global Remuneration Professional (GRP).
  • Demonstrated effective verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Knowledge of employment law and government regulations as they apply to compensation base and incentive compensation programs, company policies, and operations.
  • Ability to understand and solve unique requests in academic, research and healthcare setting.
  • Demonstrated abilities in Microsoft Office Suite including Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Demonstrated ability to present to senior leadership.
  • Systems report writing ability.


Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent in business, human resources or related field with seven years of progressively responsible experience in HR/compensation or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Supervisory or management experience.

Salary Range
$94,100.00 - $165,600.00 / Annually

The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
