Position Summary

The University of Southern Indiana is accepting applications for Senior Library Assistant.

Assist in overseeing the checkout area and primarily attend to the Library Services counter, providing excellent customer service to the library’s users and assist with enforcing policies and maintaining order in the library.

Duties/Responsibilities 

  • Assists with basic maintenance of technology collection and completes simple repairs for laptops, tablets and accessories.
  • Takes actions needed to advance special projects assigned to checkout staff.
  • Supervise student staff during weekend shifts for all checkout activities. Trains students as needed for weekend work.
  • Assists patrons with loan and return of library materials; provide assistance to patrons using library resources such as printers, computers and media equipment.
  • Assist patrons in basic navigation of library website and online resources such as room reservations, catalog, university’s information systems and basic reference inquiries.
  • Answer library, campus and community questions via phone, chat and email, directing people to the correct individual, office or building.
  • Assist in maintaining quiet and order in the library.
  • Oversee routine security checks on the floors. Respond to door alarms, restroom alarms, and security system alarms.
  • Trained in emergency fire and weather procedures and active shooter scenarios. Keep the Circulation and Testing Center Manager informed of any issues that arise. Assist as essential personnel to clear the library building when emergency situations arise, and/or when campus closure is ordered. Oversee evacuation of the building or sheltering in place in emergency situations.
  • Assist with stack maintenance by inspecting collections for areas needing attention.
  • Assist with guidance and supervision of student staff.
  • Share in backup coverage for full-time, graduate assistant and student worker staffing when required.
  • Assist with projects from other library units, as needed.
  • Assist in the maintenance of physical space including resetting furniture and placement of informational signage.
  • Serves on library or university committees.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge and Skills

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Skill in interpreting and generating written and oral instructions is required.
  • Strong judgment and decision-making skills are required to prioritize tasks and judge when policies or procedures may be altered.
  • Experience in effectively handling high pressure and emergency situations required.
  • Demonstrated adaptability and aptitude for coping with change.

Preferred Knowledge and Skills

  • Bachelor’s Degree preferred.
  • Experience in receiving and giving instructions on a variety of details is highly desired.
  • Experience in supervising people of differing abilities and experience in an academic setting highly desired.

Regular Work Hours/Travel Requirements


  • Standard work hours are Tuesday through Friday, 11:00 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday, Noon to 8:00 p.m. The university's standard work hours are 37.5 hours per week. Work hours will vary during summers and holidays.
  • Occasional overtime and additional weekend hours may be required.
