Description

The Crown Family School of Social Work, Policy, and Practice at the University of Chicago seeks to hire a full-time Senior Lecturer to teach and provide curricular and administrative support for their Master’s program in Social Sector Leadership and Nonprofit Management (SSL).  This is a full-time, 12-month (four-quarter) benefits-eligible position. The position reports to the SSA Deputy Dean for Curriculum. The appointment is renewable. 

The SSL program educates leaders focused on creating a more inclusive and just society, providing students with a deep understanding of the organizational and policy environments shaping social sector action as well as the most up-to-date skills in organizational management, governance, and analysis. The School seeks applicants who can teach in one or more of the following areas: Social Sector Governance, Nonprofit and Public Management, Performance Measurement, Nonprofit Financial Management, Collaboration and Partnerships, Inclusive Leadership, and/or Organizational Change Management. 

In addition to the Master’s degree in Social Sector Leadership and Nonprofit Management (SSL), the School also offers a Ph.D.; master’s degree in Social Work, Social Policy and Social Administration, an undergraduate minor in Inequality, Social Problems, and Social Change; and professional and community development programs. 

This Senior Lecturer will have duties in four main areas: 1) teaching, 2) overseeing the management curriculum across the SSL and Social Work programs, 3) developing and maintaining external-facing activities to support the SSL Practicum, and 4) student-facing co-curricular activities. 

1) Teaching. 

The Senior Lecturer will teach three courses per academic year in the management area of the School’s curriculum. This will include teaching courses in the Management Core of the SSL program and may also include teaching management courses in the Social Work program. Teaching responsibilities may also include the SSL Practicum. 

2) Overseeing the School’s management curriculum. 

The Senior Lecturer will have overall responsibility for developing and supporting the management curriculum at the School across both the SSL and the Social Work programs. This involves ascertaining the classroom teaching needs for each academic year’s management course offerings and taking the lead on filling those needs through hiring instructors and scheduling course offerings in collaboration with the Director of the Social Work Program. Specific duties include the following: 

  • Oversee the curricular content of the Management Core courses of the SSL program and the Social Work program, including maintaining an up-to-date curriculum 

  • Recruit, screen, interview, hire and supervise part-time lecturers to teach management courses at the School.  

  • Work with the Deputy Dean of Curriculum, Director of the Social Work Program, and the Curriculum Manager to coordinate teaching schedules for instructors teaching management courses in both the SSL and the Social Work programs. 

  • Support and supervise classroom instructors teaching management courses for both Social Work and SSL programs 

  • Responsible for conducting evaluations of lecturers and instructional professors as needed and required for Collective Bargaining agreements and the University 

  • Support the Dean’s Office in maintaining compliance with Collective Bargaining Agreements between the University and instructors 

3) SSL Practicum development activities 

The Senior Lecturer will engage in relationship-building with external constituencies to facilitate the placement of SSL students in effective Practicum experiences. Duties include: 

  • Raise awareness in the Chicagoland social sector about the availability of SSL students to conduct quarter-long Practicum experience projects. 

  • Work with the Crown School Field Office and other Crown offices to identify appropriate Chicagoland social sector organizations to facilitate placement of SSL students for quarter-long Practicum experience projects. 

  • Build relationships and processes with Chicagoland social sector organizations to facilitate placement of SSL students for quarter-long Practicum experience projects. 

4) Student-facing support around curricular and co-curricular activities. 

The Senior Lecturer will be a key point of contact for students in the SSL program. Duties in this domain include the following. 

  • Advise SSL Master’s students regarding programmatic offerings and career development. 

  • Work with other Crown offices, such as Career Development and Dean of Students, to offer appropriate co-curricular activities for SSL students. 

  • Collaborate with the SSL Faculty Director to respond to changing SSL student needs. 


Qualifications

The Senior Lecturer will possess the following: 

  • Demonstrated innovative and effective teaching in a graduate or professional school, as evidenced by a portfolio of syllabi including judicious use of hands-on classroom activities;  

  • Supervisory experience required;  

  • Experience working in and/or conducting research with social sector organizations; 

  • Master’s degree in social work, management, public affairs, public policy, or related social science discipline required; a doctorate is strongly preferred.
