Senior Lecturer: Engineering Communications Program and School of Continuing Education, split position

Together, the Cornell Engineering Communications Program (ECP), in the College of Engineering at Cornell University, and the Cornell School of Continuing Education (SCE) located in Ithaca, NY, USA, invite applications for a full-time Senior Lecturer position, with teaching responsibilities beginning Fall semester 2024. This non-tenure track position, teaching professional and/or engineering communications, is a nine-month position, appointed three to five years, with possible renewal. Applicants are expected to reside in Ithaca, NY, USA, even when teaching distance-delivery courses.

This position will be equally split with half of each semester’s teaching load seated in the Engineering Communications Program and half seated in the School of Continuing Education’s new online bachelor degree program. The teaching commitment is comparable to a 2/2 load. These courses, each with their own overall focus, ask instructors to cover not only writing but also honing presentation skills, developing figures and tables, working in teams, creating multimodal elements, establishing library skills, and related concepts. Course capacities are 24 or 25 students per section.

A strong candidate will also seek opportunities to contribute to developing and enhancing the pedagogical innovations and visibility of the sponsoring programs. This may happen in a variety of ways, including but not limited to the following: professional presentations via relevant conferences or other venues, publishing peer-reviewed articles, or conducting workshops for industry representatives or interested faculty and students at the College or University levels. There is no required university committee work, other than participating in ECP and SCE program meetings; however, the programs welcome faculty  to join committees and other activities that forward the mission of either or both programs. 

The position and program are a good fit for teacher-scholars interested in cross-disciplinary instruction in professional, technical, and engineering communications. ECP and SCE encourage teacher-research in these areas, particularly as it contributes to the programs and enhances communication instruction across disciplines. Funds are available to support the presentation and/or publication of such teacher-research.

Preferred Qualifications  

These qualifications will be considered to be connected, related, and of equal importance; as such, the demands of each program are intended to be complimentary, rather than competitive. That is to say, the goals of both programs are in alignment and are very similar for this position. The review committee will consider the strengths of the whole application packet for each candidate to assess how individual strengths align with programmatic needs. 

  • For both programs, a strong candidate will be able to cover not only writing but also honing presentation skills, developing figures and tables, working in teams, creating multimodal elements, establishing library skills, and more. We are looking for people with teaching experience regarding communication practices that combine writing, presenting, and crafting multimodal communication pieces (such as figures, tables, video, games development documentation, modeling, dashboards, etc.).
  • For the ECP element of the job, it is desirable that the candidate have past work in partnered teaching with faculty and with student teams (not as an assistant, grader, or TA) across business, law, engineering, technical, scientific disciplines or specializations. In the context of this position, “partnered teaching” includes co-teaching with field-specific professors/instructors with add-on communication courses attached to a field-specific course.
  • For both ECP and SCE, a strong candidate will have deep experience (5+ years) delivering courses online teaching at the college level. This includes synchronous and asynchronous online classes.
  • For both ECP and SCE—but especially SCE —a strong candidate will have experience working with nontraditional students, such as working adult students.
  • Preference given to candidates with a Ph.D. in hand (the minimal requirement) by May 31, 2024 in one of these areas

  • Science Communication
  • Applied Linguistics with a specialization in Professional and Academic Discourse or related sector
  • Related degree with a focus on written communication with competencies in teaching oral presentations and multimodal artifacts

Additional Desired Qualifications

ECP and SCE believe that forward-looking solutions should incorporate as many perspectives as possible; our programs’ foundational principles rest on a cornerstone of inclusivity and authentic exchanges of expertise and perspective.

Experience teaching professional, technical, scientific, or engineering communications at the university level is important. Working with graduates students would be a plus, and additional preferred areas of expertise are Teaching of English as a Second Language (TESL), English for Specific Purposes (ESP), English for Academic Purposes (EAP), Communication Across the Curriculum (CAC or CXC), Communication in the Disciplines (CID), Genre Studies, and Multimodal Communication. 

Likewise, applicants who will help ECP and SCE continue explorations of diverse communication strategies for purposes that cross cultural boundaries, community needs, languages, and ability-based needs, are invited to apply.

Applicants with interdisciplinary teaching experience and experience identifying and serving the instructional needs of faculty in various technical fields are highly desirable. Experiences that include leadership and ethics would be valuable.

Pay Ranges: $ 58,00 - $155,800. This position's pay range is: $72,000 - $92,000.

$58,600.00 - $164,000.00
