Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Senior Lab Technician in Biorespository Repository at Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey.
Under direction, Senior Lab Technician performs technical shared resource laboratory procedures in support of cancer research activities of CINJ and Rutgers researchers. Maintains collections, accessioning, labelling, basic processing, storage and distribution of biospecimens. Maintains labs workflow, supplies, instruments, documentation. Practices universal precautions and HIPAA compliance. Works independently performing REHS and CAP SOPs.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
  • On a daily basis, collects biospecimens from area hospital operating rooms, pathology laboratories, CINJ outpatient clinic, and other patient encounter areas to transport them to the CINJ BRS laboratory or other CINJ Research laboratory.
  • Efficiently performs standard BRS laboratory procedures, such as PBMC, centrifugation, snap or flash freezing,
    fixing, aliquoting, specimen processing to stabilize the samples for distribution or short/long term storage.
  • Accurately documents and accessions biospecimen collection information onto specimen collection forms, log books. Accurately labels biospecimens. Also, accurately transcribes written specimen collection information into BRS confidential database. Maintains consistent, accurate, ongoing communication concerning specimen collections. Addresses data entry QA discrepancies as needed and in a timely manner.
  • Requests and retrieves RWJ archival and BRS FFPE tissues for protocols. Maintains workflow, organization, accessioning, and return for these protocols. Documents tissue retrieval/return in CoPath and CINJ databases.
  • Retrieves, de-identifies and scans pathology reports as per protocol. Uploads path reports to database as needed.
  • Performs and keeps accurate records of specimen distribution, shipping, transfers and dispositions as per lab SOPs. Works to ensure seamless intra lab work flow and request between the BRS and HPS.
  • Maintains an organized laboratory, supply inventory, bench space, cold and ambient storage units. Alerts supervisor/manager when inventory is low. May assist with placing orders as needed.
  • Is proficient in using instruments, hoods, BSCs, pipets, and other relevant equipment. Trains new BRS lab technical personnel with consent of lab supervisor or manager.
  • Disposes of RMW, chemical waste and Sharps, also maintains a safe clean lab as per REHS and CAP guidelines.
  • Clear, professional communication via email, text, phone, and writing and in person with: fellow staff, PIs, clinical staff, pathology staff, subordinates, managers, supervisors, consent docents, research coordinators, IST, central lab staff, coordinating labs and other shared resourcesis a must. Attends meetings as needed and directed by manager or supervisor. Provides collection, accessioning and processing guidance at meetings fluently.

COVID-19 Immunization Requirement
Under Policy 60.1.35 , Rutgers University requires all prospective employees to provide proof that they are fully vaccinated and have received a booster (where eligible) against COVID-19 prior to commencement of employment, unless the University has granted the individual a medical or religious exemption.  Prospective employees who are not eligible for a booster at the time of an offer of employment must provide proof they have received a booster within two weeks (14 calendar days) of eligibility .  Based on current guidance, individuals are considered fully vaccinated against COVID-19 two weeks after receiving the final dose of any COVID-19 vaccine authorized or approved for use in the United States by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and recommended by the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).  Eligibility for a booster against COVID-19 varies and is explained on the University’s web site located at https://coronavirus.rutgers.edu/covid-19-vaccine .  Failure to provide proof of primary vaccination and booster will result in rescission of a prospective employee’s offer of employment and/or disciplinary action up to and including termination.

Qualifications


Minimum Education and Experience
  • Two (2) years of related laboratory, pathology accessioning or other medical related experience.
Certifications/Licenses
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Ability to read, write, speak and understand, or communicate in English fluently to perform job duties.
  • Communication with all levels is vital to effective collection of bio-specimens.
  • The ability to follow laboratory SOPs.
  • Ability to organize assigned laboratory work and develop effective work methods.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Must be computer literate with proficiency and working knowledge of database and reporting tools such as Microsoft Word, Excel.
  • Must be able to perform occasional overtime as needed.
  • Mandatory “on-call” laboratory schedule must be adhered to for complete collection of all protocol related bio-specimens.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Candidate with valid driver’s license.

Physical Demands and Work Environment
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Standing, sitting, walking, talking and hearing. No special vision requirements. Lifting up to 25 lbs.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: Laboratory environment. Moderate noise. Exposure to blood, excrement, antineoplastic drugs, and possible exposure to infectious and communicable diseases. Universal precautions are mandatory. Exposure to hazardous chemicals.
