Senior Instructional Professor (open rank) - Chemistry

The Department of Chemistry at the University of Chicago invites applications for a Senior Instructional Professor (open rank) position in Organic Chemistry. The candidate will be appointed as Assistant Senior Instructional Professor, Associate Senior Instructional Professor, or Senior Instructional Professor depending on qualifications and years of experience in a similar role. Appointments at this rank are for a term of up to five years with the possibility of renewal. This is a career-track position with potential progression and competitive salary and benefits. Expected start date is academic year 2026-2027.

Responsibilities will include:

• Serve as Assistant Director of Undergraduate Studies for Organic Chemistry, contributing to undergraduate advising, curriculum development, pedagogical innovation, and program coordination.
• Oversee undergraduate organic chemistry laboratories, including development of experiments and instructional materials, management of laboratory spaces and equipment, safety coordination, and laboratory operations.
• Teach undergraduate organic chemistry and serve as secondary instructor for the organic chemistry sequence.
• Coordinate course operations, instructional resources, assessments, accommodations, and academic administration.
• Hire, supervise, train, and mentor teaching assistants, graders, and instructional staff within the organic chemistry undergraduate program, ensuring consistency and instructional quality.
• Manage student enrollment, academic progress, and course-related issues in coordination with faculty, advisors, and University partners.

Minimum qualifications: Completion of a Ph.D. degree in Organic Chemistry, Chemistry, or a closely related field is required prior to the start of appointment.

Preferred qualifications:

• Demonstrated excellence in teaching undergraduate organic chemistry.
• Experience teaching and coordinating undergraduate organic chemistry laboratories.
• Experience in curriculum development, instructional innovation, and evidence-based pedagogy.
• Experience mentoring and supervising teaching assistants or instructional staff.
• Demonstrated organizational and administrative skills in managing large undergraduate courses.
• Experience with learning management systems and instructional technologies.
