Description

 

The Department of East Asian Languages and Civilizations (EALC) at the University of Chicago is accepting applications for a Senior Instructional Professor (open rank) in Japanese. This is a full-time, benefits- eligible position, with an initial appointment of at least three-years. Longer initial appointments may be possible depending on the experience and qualifications of the selected candidate. The expected start date of the position is September 1, 2023, or as soon as possible thereafter.

 

The Senior Instructional Professor will serve as Director of the Japanese Language Program in the Department of East Asian Languages and Civilizations at one of North America’s most respected research universities. They will provide curricular vision and direction for the Japanese language program, including supervision and review of Instructional Professors teaching in the program, and will be responsible for overseeing the pedagogical and administrative aspects of the Program. The selected candidate will also teach in the Japanese Language Program. While serving as Program Director, the course assignment will typically be reduced to four courses/sections per year.


Qualifications

Required qualifications include:

  • ACTFL Superior-level proficiency in Japanese or equivalent
  • an MA or PhD in Japanese Studies or a related discipline
  • a minimum of three years of teaching experience in Japanese language at the college or postsecondary level, at multiple levels

Preferred qualifications include:

  • Specialized training in second language acquisition, second language pedagogy and/or assessment
  • Experience developing and implementing Japanese language courses  
  • Supervisory experience or potential to be an effective supervisor of a staff of language instructors.
