Scope of Job
To lead and provide senior-level expertise and support to faculty and staff for the planning, design and development of instructional courseware for traditional, online, and hybrid modality courses. Responsible for the design, development and implementation of instructional course design in compliance with applicable federal and state guidelines.
Description of Duties
  • Oversees and leads the design, development and implementation of instructional course design in compliance with applicable federal and state guidelines.
  • Plans, coordinates and oversees seminars, workshops, training and courses on various education and technology related topics.
  • Provides complex expertise to staff regarding instructional design strategies.
  • Ensures the design, development and evaluation of the curriculum, instructional methods and materials, and that latest trends are implemented to provide students and faculty with the best resources available for both online and face to face instruction.
  • Guides, mentors and provides support to assigned staff.
  • Provides complex support for faculty in designing and implementing course assessments; assist the academic departments with documenting and improving based upon their programmatic assessment data.
  • Reviews online and hybrid courses by applying the Quality Matters Rubric to ensure the highest level of course quality, student experience and engagement.
  • Assists with the systematic review and evaluation of the planning unit per the model adopted by the college and/or program, including the development and monitoring of outcomes and plans of action for improvement based on the assessment of those outcomes and plans.
  • Provides higher-level support for the development of augmented/virtual reality, immersive learning environments and other innovative approaches.
  • Researches and evaluates the continuous quality improvement of online and hybrid courses and makes recommendations to upper management.
  • Creates, maintains, and manages documentation for projects and manages assigned projects through completion.
  • Supports and applies best practices of Universal Design for Learning to assist faculty in the development of course materials that are accessible to all students.
  • Ensures that all courses and course components are student-centered, enable the intended learning outcomes, as well as meet university values/standards, accessibility requirements, and universal design guidelines.
  • Participates in the hiring, training and evaluation of assigned staff.
  • Stay abreast of emerging technologies and their application to enhancing face-to-face and online courses; recommends effective and creative uses of technology and andragogy to enhance instruction and create new learning opportunities; recommends solutions as appropriate.
  • Represents the department and the University on various committees and in various teaching positions including presenting at various state and/or national conferences.
  • Develops and generates reports as needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Education
Bachelor’s degree in education, instructional design / technology, or related field from an accredited University.
Preferred Education
Master’s degree in education, instructional design /technology, or closely related field from an accredited university.
Licenses/Certifications
None.
Required Experience
Four (4) years of experience as an instructional designer, developer, educator, educational project management or a Master’s Degree in education, instructional design /technology and two (2) years of the required experience.
Preferred Experience
None.
Equipment
Use of standard office equipment.
Working Conditions
Needs to be able to successfully perform all required duties. Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Office Environment; some travel and weekend work is required. UTRGV is a distributed institution, which requires presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley.
Other
Knowledge of current and emerging technology, learning and instructional theory, instructional design principles, design process, and interface design principles. Ability to work as a team member and to establish effective working relationships. Ability to effectively use interpersonal and communication skills. Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
