Position Summary
The Senior Instructional Designer (Sr. ID) works under the general supervision of the Assistant Director of Instructional Design on the Distance Education team. In conjunction with other stakeholders, the Sr. ID assists with the creation of learning experiences for multiple modalities including face-to-face, hybrid/blended, and fully online instruction, facilitates the course development/design process, and evaluates curricular materials (e.g., courses, technologies, modules) based on Quality Matters rubrics and standards, providing expertise on the instructional effectiveness of course design and delivery. The Sr. ID designs, coordinates, and delivers training and professional development opportunities for faculty to improve online instruction and ensure best practices are used in online course offerings. This individual will work closely with faculty, researching and incorporating proven learning strategies, pedagogy, adult learning theory, and quality practices into new and existing distance learning programs and courses. The Sr. ID is responsible for the success of a number of simultaneous projects, reporting progress, and communicating effectively with stakeholders in an effort to promote collaboration and accountability.
Austin Peay State University is a four-year public, doctoral-level university, with six colleges and four Chairs of Excellence. The University has an enrollment of over 9,000 students and is located in Clarksville, Tennessee, a community of an estimated 166,000 people located approximately 40 miles northwest of Nashville, TN.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provide training and support to faculty members on effective instructional design practices, instructional technology tools, and the integration of technology into teaching and learning.
  • Lead the design and development process of online, hybrid, and face-to-face courses, ensuring alignment with instructional design best practices, pedagogical principles, and accessibility standards.
  • Design and create learning objects, resources, and tutorials in a variety of formats including print, graphics, audio, video, and animation technologies to support online course and programs and professional development initiatives.
  • Conduct thorough online/hybrid course reviews and provide faculty ongoing feedback and assistance to meet APSU Online Quality Fundamentals and/or Quality Matters standards.
  • Review, validate, and recommend revisions for instructional materials, learning activities, and assessments in accordance with learning objectives.
  • Design, develop, and deliver training materials for faculty in various formats and delivery modes.
  • Educate and assist university stakeholders to ensure digital course materials, multimedia projects, and instructional technology are compliant with current accessibility standards
  • Assist the university in remaining in compliance with Distance Education regulations and policies.
  • Collaborate with other Distance Education team members to ensure instructional technology settings have optimal functionality and usability for users.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Physical Requirements
  • Must be able to spend a prolonged period of time in front of a computer monitor.
  • Light Work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.
  • Position is physically comfortable; the individual has discretion about walking, standing, sitting, etc. and has minimal exposure to outside elements.
Required Minimum Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in instructional design, instructional/educational technology, or a related field
  • Previous experience designing courses or curriculum, including objectives, learning activities, and assessments
  • Previous experience assisting faculty with technological knowledge, skills, and tools to enhance teaching
