The School of Medicine’s Department of Medicine, Division of General Internal Medicine has an opening for a full-time University Staff (unclassified) Senior IT Professional position.

Jobs in the Research Services career family provide direct professional support of research activities.  Functions include contracts and grants solicitation and administration, grant/agreement preparation, review and negotiation, regulatory compliance, sponsor communication and post and pre award management, human subject compliance, research animal management, research laboratory coordination and instruction, environmental health and safety, radiation control, hazardous materials use, disposal and training.

Senior Professionals are responsible for exercising discretion, analytical skill, personal accountability and responsibility in a wide range of areas including academic, administrative, managerial and student services functions. Work involves creating, integrating, applying and sharing knowledge directly related to a professional field.  Work is performed fully independently.

Nature of Work

Senior Information Science Professionals utilize applied or computational mathematical analyses for a wide array of different applications and to solve complex problems. Studies may include data linkage, text interpretation, coding, and Bayesian analyses. Senior Information Science Professionals may also perform duties in labs that use primarily electronic equipment. Some assignments will not move beyond this level. The Division of General Internal Medicine at the University of Colorado School of Medicine is seeking a Senior Information Science Professional. This position will be with the Barocas Lab , an innovative, interdisciplinary research program that is aimed at studying the intersection of infectious diseases, substance use disorders, and social determinants of health. This research program uses a combination of clinical epidemiology, simulation modeling, machine learning, and health economics to 1) improve health outcomes for vulnerable populations, 2) uncover structural factors that drive health inequities, and 3) inform health policy.

Housed within this lab are several highly innovative programs including 1) The Missing US Project, a multi-state project aimed at uncovering hidden populations and hidden risk factors for substance use and HIV and re-defining epidemiologic surveillance systems using a community-engaged approach, 2) The ReDUCE Project, which uses simulation modeling to understand cost-effective strategies to reduce infectious complications associated with substance use, and 3) Fentanyl Felonization Study, a state-funded project to understand the health effects of criminal penalties for drug use, and 4) the Health Economics Core for the HEALing Communities Study, a large-scale, multi-state intervention study to reduce opioid overdose deaths by 40%. This position will work alongside the principal investigator and several team members in several states in the analytic aspects of the research including data management, advanced statistical analyses, and simulation modeling.

Examples of Duties Performed

  • Collaborate with and support Principal Investigators (PI) and other stakeholders in the area of

bioinformatics and data analysis

  • Perform scientifically rigorous data management and bioinformatic analyses
    • Import datasets into a variety of software applications including R, SAS, and python, perform data cleaning
  • Develop and disseminate a variety of tools designed to access relevant clinical and sample data
    • Develop machine learning algorithms, natural language processing tools, and end user tools
    • Develop and interpret MCMC models; develop meta-models
  • Develop and implement complex analyses pipelines, programming, and data visualization techniques for multi-layered datasets
  • Creatively and effectively integrate data from multiple sources to accelerate discoveries
    • Analyze epidemiologic and administrative data using basic and advanced statistical methodologies; including regression modeling, survival analysis, causal inference, and propensity score matching; interpret results for investigators and prepare reports
    • Interpret model results to draw conclusions about intervention sustainability and cost-effectiveness
  • Assist with the design and development of major bioinformatics-related programming projects
  • Write custom scripts to access databases and analyze data
  • Write custom web tools for PIs and other stakeholders
  • Independently and creatively identify bioinformatic and data management solutions
  • Assist Team Leads, Supervisors and/or management with creation and implementation of processes and procedures and quality improvement initiatives
  • Assist and train junior team members
  • Assist with developing or develop protocol-specific systems and documents including process flows, training manuals, and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). Maintains subject level documentation and prepares documents, equipment and/or supplies
  • Assist with identifying issues related to operational efficiency and shares results with leadership
  • Provide the biostatistical/data science expertise and leadership in study design, study oversight, data management, data analysis and manuscript preparation to assist all levels of biomedical investigators and clinicians on new research activities across a wide range of disciplines
  • Serve as a resource to PIs and other stakeholders

Additional Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Conduct deep and thorough review of subject literature
  • Write and edit manuscripts at various stages of development
  • Maintain project records and ensure adherence to established timelines
  • Balance multiple competing priorities and tasks
  • Prepare and coordinate applications to IRBs
  • Track progress of IRB approvals and continued reporting
  • Attend multidisciplinary meetings and work groups
  • Assist with project documentation, reporting, presentations, and preparation of manuscripts
  • Maintain and update project and regulatory files, as necessary
  • Collaborate with researchers at other institutions and with government officials
  • Administrative tasks

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Bioinformatics, Biostatistics, Computational Biology, Data Science, Computer Science, or related
    • A combination of education and related technical/paraprofessional experience may be substituted for the bachelor’s degree on a year for year basis
  • Two (2) years of data management and bioinformatic analyses experience, including tools such as R, STATA, SAS, C++, or python as well as RedCap

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Bioinformatics, Biostatistics, Computational Biology, Data Science, Computer Science or related field
  • Three (3) or more years of experience analyzing data using high-performance computing
  • Experience in foundations of epidemiology
  • Experience with C++, python

Competencies, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Database software expertise (proficient or advanced) such as, but not limited to, R, STATA, SAS, C++, or python as well as RedCap.
  • Basic knowledge of advanced mathematics (such as calculus)
  • Advanced knowledge of basic statistical principles relevant in medical research
  • Ability to analyze and solve complex problems and apply quantitative analytical approaches
  • Demonstrated fluency in one or more programming languages (e.g., R, Python, Perl, Java, C++) and willingness to learn new programming languages as necessary
  • Familiarity with statistical analytical concepts and methods
  • Excellent computer literacy including experience with Microsoft Office Suite (including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Teams, and Outlook) and applications such as Zoom.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both in writing and orally
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees at all levels throughout the institution
  • Outstanding customer service skills
  • Demonstrated commitment and leadership ability to advance diversity and inclusion
  • Ability to interpret and master complex research protocol information
  • Knowledge of basic human anatomy, physiology medical terminology

Salary and Benefits

The salary range (or hiring range ) for this position has been established at $58,955 - $74,991.

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.

The above salary range (or hiring range ) represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

This position is not eligible for overtime compensation.
