Position Summary/Purpose of Position: | This position serves as a Senior Health Physicist/Assistant Radiation Safety Officer within the University’s Radiation Safety Office and reports to the Manager, Radiation Safety/Radiation Safety Officer(RSO) within the Department of Environmental Safety, Sustainability and Risk (ESSR). The Senior Health Physicist/Assistant Radiation Safety Officer provides high level technical support for the overall safety program designed to ensure radiation exposures are maintained As Low As Reasonably Achievable (ALARA). The Senior Health Physicist/Assistant Radiation Safety Officer takes a lead role in the development and implementation of radiation safety programs specific to the management of the research involving radiation and radioactive materials; this includes , but is not limited to the to University Training Reactor (MUTR) and Radiation Facility. The position supports the RSO and the campus’ Radiation Safety Committees in the development, implementation and maintenance of policies, plans, guidelines, training, and practices that support regulatory compliance within licensed operations at the University’s College Park campus and other areas under its control. Responsibilities include conducting a wide -variety of radiological surveys and laboratory sample, analyses for identification and quantification of radioactive material; development of radiation safety programs and procedures; performance and documentation of hazard analysis for research protocols ; recommending control measures to ensure occupational and public exposures are maintained ALARA; maintaining radiological certifications; developing and providing training; reviewing proposed regulations and standards; implementing regulatory requirements; preparing reports and other technical documents ; responding to incidents; performing other job-related duties as assigned. |
