Job Summary

The Senior Graphic Designer works under the general direction of the Associate Director, and the Creative Director, of Campus Life Services Strategic Marketing and Communications. The incumbent will collaborate with members of the CLS marketing team, and their CLS business partners to produce compelling, directive-driven promotional design to support revenue generation, awareness-building of the business lines unique value, or generate participation in various programming offered either by Campus Life Services to its customers, or exclusive programming targeting CLS employees. The incumbent may also provide design for comprehensive campaigns in multiple formats for its CLS customers, and UCSF-commissioned campaigns that support the institutional mission (e.g., patient care, staff engagement, sustainability goals, information campaigns, and others). The incumbent will collaborate with management to develop and execute organizational communication and market branding strategy. Incumbent should be comfortable working independently and on teams or committees. Incumbent must be comfortable designing for various channels or platforms and formats including but not limited to: digital screens, websites, digital and printed brochures, graphics for social media, printed flyers and posters, graphics used in video, and other emerging digital platforms in collaboration with other marketing team members. Incumbent should be comfortable working within a deadline-driven, production environment, where the incumbent may be assigned multiple projects at any given time. Incumbent must be experienced in using a project’s creative brief to drive design, and be able to defend their design choices with a clear rationale that demonstrates how project goals will be met through design. The incumbent is expected to adhere to established UCSF and UCSF Health brand guidelines at all times. The incumbent should also be up-to-date on current trends in traditional and interactive/digital graphic design, and user experience, as well as standard marketing principles including but not limited to brand, product or program differentiation, and audience targeting. Lastly, the Senior Graphic Designer must be comfortable collaborating on teams and with committees from across UCSF.

Department Description

CLS Marketing and Communications department – This group provides marketing leadership for the diverse business and services lines of Campus Life Services. In our current services portfolio, we provide marketing and communication strategies, copywriting, and PR editorial services across multiple platforms: websites, social media, digital signage, the official UCSF mobile app, and E-mail marketing. We rely on CLS Documents & Media for design and production services. Additionally, we may partner with other UCSF groups to provide consultation and/or communication strategies on UCSF-wide projects or initiatives. We also partner – and provide content to – CLS Tech to support development and marketing of the official UCSF mobile app and other emerging digital platforms and services; and the development of analytics reports to measure marketing effectiveness.

Campus Life Services (CLS) is a large administrative division that employs approximately 950 staff (full-and-part time) and includes complex departments such as facilities, utilities, sustainability, housing, parking & transportation, child care, fitness & recreation, conference & retail services, document & print services, among others. Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • 3+ years of progressive relevant experience.
  • Current on use of design and production software including Adobe Suite, Filemaker, Microsoft Office.
  • Knowledge of all aspects of communications, including strategic planning for various media venues, technical aspects and requirements of various venues, and most appropriate and effective applications.
  • Knowledge and understanding of technical applications to effectively direct technical staff, or personally perform technical work, including design concepts, various media, and applications.
  • Solid skills to create, develop, and implement comprehensive long and short term strategic communications plans.
  • Knowledge and skills to advise and consult with management to ensure delivery of the desired message to the target and / or broad general audiences.
  • Solid written, verbal, interpersonal communications, active listening and political acumen skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of location protocols and channels for communication internally and externally.
  • Knowledge of UCSF brand, communication protocols, and institutional values
  • Knowledge of the organization, its achievements, mission, vision, goals, policies, practices, infrastructure, and a strong knowledge of current affairs, and issues in higher education and / or health sciences.
