The Senior Graphic Designer position within the Custom Solutions and Integration team conceptualizes and creates wireframes for new and enhanced user interface designs for custom Princeton University applications. The Senior Graphic Designer works closely with development and user experience teams to create academic and administrative application interfaces that are user centric, intuitive, and result in a positive end user experience. The Senior Graphic Designer also plays an integral part to the development and maintenance of the Design System, which is used by developers in the department and across campus.

 

The Senior Graphic Designer reports to the Director of the Custom Solutions and Integrations and User Experience Team.



  • Assess, research, recommend and implement user interface designs for critical and complex custom applications for a diverse customer base:
    • Attend customer requirements gathering sessions to understand the customer need. Conceptualize and design user interfaces for custom web applications according to requirements.
    • Incorporate accessibility and user experience best practices within the designs.
    • Work with the CSI team’s business analyst and developers to develop and design wireframes and user flows to complement the applications and functionality. This will include but not be limited to mock-ups and clickable demos for reviews, testing, and customer demonstrations.
    • Be fully responsible for collecting functional design requirements and incorporate them in complementing user stories.
  • Create design solutions that are cross-platform and cross-browser compatible. Be responsible for cross-platform and cross-browser testing.
  • Take ownership of the design cycle within the software application life cycle. Look for ways to constantly improve the process in light of customer/team needs and industry trends. Lead and direct the work of others if/when needed.
  • Creatively highlight opportunities to continue to improve the design process within an Agile software development environment. Validate ideas with process diagrams and demonstrate them to the development team and customers for feedback.
  • Play an integral role in the building and maintaining of Princeton University’s Enterprise Design System inclusive of managing the project when required. Be fully responsible for the documentation work stream of the Design System.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional team members to conduct design sessions toward the creation of front-end software applications as well as to generate ideas to further benefit the Design System.
  • Be self-motivated and self-accountable. Management of multiple concurrent projects and prioritization of stories within the projects on a daily basis will be the responsibility of the individual.
  • Own the management of design projects from concept to delivery. Be responsible for authoring design user stories, creating original artwork and managing timelines.
  • Have the knowledge and some experience to implement CSS and HTML code within the applications to bring the graphic designs to life.
  • Develop and conduct usability reviews and tests with customers as and when needed.
  • When provided access to personal, proprietary and/or otherwise confidential data, maintain such data in the strictest confidence and follows procedures to ensure the privacy, security, and proper use of data.
  • Lead and present design concepts and wireframes at technical and customer meetings.

  • Provide leadership and consultation in design and user interface best practices to developers and customers.

  • Serve as the resident expert in application design and keep abreast of current industry standards in design techniques and procedures.

  • Manage the Design System project in collaboration with other team members.

  • Manage the design process within software development projects.

  • Manage design projects within the software application process.



  • 10+ years of work experience managing design projects for applications from requirements gathering to the delivery of a delightful end user experience.
  • A background in graphic design with a focus on web and digital design.
  • Depth and breadth of knowledge that suit the functionality of the application, such as visual graphics and representation of data sets.
  • Extensive experience and judgment to plan, prioritize, and accomplish goals among projects and applications within a diverse customer and technical development community.
  • Strong foundation in user experience including familiarity with creating user experience patterns (components and templates) for building a common design language and developing a Design System for applications programmers in OIT and across campus to use.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills having the ability to communicate effectively with the technology and business community adapting communication styles to fit the audience.
  • Ability to work effectively as a team player as well as an independent contributor with little or no supervision.
  • Ability to conduct usability tests and record and incorporate feedback within wireframe iterations.
  • Ability to perform a variety of highly complicated tasks (project management, design work stream, cross-functional collaboration) with expertise.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Skill in understanding and conceptualizing customer needs and then working with business analysts and developers to create user friendly software application interfaces.
  • Proficiency in a wide variety of tools, technologies, and best practices, such as:
    • Project Management
    • Agile software development methodology
    • JIRA
    • Azure DevOps
    • FIGMA
    • Adobe Creative Suite
    • Storybook
    • Wave evaluation tool for accessibility
    • Experience with screen readers (NVDA and/or Jaws)

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Ability to create and conduct usability tests.
  • Significant background in UX, especially as it pertains to accessibility and front-end web design.
