Senior Grants Manager

The Department of Chemistry is seeking a grants manager (GM) for a vibrant and complex academic department of research-active faculty. The grants manager works closely with Princeton's central sponsored research office to manage federal and corporate sponsored grants and manages four staff in the grants and research administration area, including an assistant grants manager.

 

This individual assists in the preparation of grant submissions and monitors grant spending to ensure that it tracks with the original grant proposal. The GM reviews and verifies final project reports, serves as a liaison with university sponsored research accounting and ensures departmental compliance with applicable sponsor, federal, and university regulations, policies and procedures.

 

This position manages $20+ million in sponsored research spending, annually, and provides tailored funding projections and financial portfolio management guidance to 25+ faculty members. 

 



Pre-award: Prepares proposal documentation, including budget proposals, in accordance with sponsor requirements. Prepares documents required for URB, IRB, IACUC, and Biosafety committee review and approval. Prepares grant proposal submissions through internal submission system (ERA) for internal documentation and/or system to system submission. The grants manager also submits through the applicable, sponsor-specific system, when necessary.

 

Post Award: Monitors spending to ensure that grant budgets are on track with the original proposal. Prepares revised budgets and budget justifications as required. Coordinates with sponsored research office regarding items such as foreign travel vouchers and capital equipment purchases. Ensures timely submission of salary and wage (effort) certifications. Tracks and monitors department cost share commitments. Other duties include cost transfers; subcontract monitoring; and Labor Accounting for faculty summer salaries and postdoctoral researchers. Reviews and verifies final reports with Sponsored Research Accounting and serves as a liaison between academic units and university research administration offices. Works with Sponsored Research Accounting to respond to requests from internal and external auditors. Approves all capital and fabricated equipment purchases above threshhold. Reviews and approves travel expense reports on grants.

 

Financial Management: Responsible for creating customized long-term projections of faculty financial portfolios, including sponsored and non-sponsored accounts for faculty PIs, to determine the funds required to sustain laboratory operations, determine fund-raising needs, anticipate grant increments, and understand spending burn rates.

This individual will also provide guidance to faculty relating to intellectual property, confidentiality and technology transfer, communicate sponsored research policies and provide training to staff when needed.



  • Bachelor's degree and 3-5 years of related experience.
  • Must be detail-oriented, conscientious, and deadline-driven.
  • Ability to understand and interpret complex federal grant requirements and compliance issues.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to interact diplomatically with faculty, staff, students, and administrators.
  • A sense of humor is helpful.
  • Ability to thrive in a teamwork environment.
  • Grants management experience preferred in academic or non-academic setting.
  • Knowledge of Princeton University financial systems preferred.
