To plan, develop and coordinate the institutional fire safety programs for the University of Michigan Hospitals and Health Centers.

Characteristic Duties

  •          Develop and implement effective fire prevention and response programs, policies, procedures and reporting mechanisms that comply with University, MIOSHA, NFPA and The Joint Commission Environment of Care standards.
  •          Coordinate the institutional fire drill program, conduct drills and report on results. Create and maintain fire drill schedule. 
  •          Investigate fire alarms and fire events that affect UMHHC staff and patients. Write detailed reports and track data to identify root causes. Create action plans for improvement to identify fire prevention measures to prevent future incidents.
  •          Participates in Fire / Life Safety, regulating codes and compliance related committees, meetings, conferences, and seminars to improve knowledge and consult with experts and peers.
  •          Conduct plan reviews of proposed new building and remodeling plans to ensure compliance with NFPA and other applicable codes.
  •          Inspect facilities for fire safety risks and assist departments in implementing corrective actions.
  •          Provide fire safety training to staff, such as fire extinguisher training.   
  •          Serve as the institutional resource on fire safety standards.
  •          Respond to staff concerns and complaints regarding fire safety.
  •          Coordinate with related organizations, such as Infection Prevention and EHS.
  •          Some travel to off-site locations.
  •          This position will occasionally need to cover all 3 shifts for training and fire drills.

  •         Bachelor's degree or greater from an accredited university in safety engineering, fire safety, occupational safety, or a related scientific or engineering field or equivalent.
  •          Recent coursework in current building code and NFPA codes and standards.
  •          Current CFI or ability to obtain CFI.
  •          At least 8 years of professional experience in coordinating fire safety programs in a hospital, educational institution, or similar large, complex facilities.
  •          Excellent public speaking and writing skills. Excellent computer skills using standard MS office programs.
  •          Must have a valid driver's license.

M-F daytime hours, 7:30 am - 4:30 pm, with some flexibility allowed after completing the probationary period. Additional work hours are required during evenings, nights and weekends to respond to institutional needs.

Supervision Received

Administrative and functional supervision is received from the Director of Safety. Functional supervision is also received from the Assistant Safety Director and or other designee.

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings.  Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
