The Department of Finance has an outstanding opportunity for a Senior Financial Data Analyst join their team.

The Senior Financial Data Analyst will provide meaningful, integrated financial data for analysis and decision-making across the Management Accounting and Analysis’ (MAA) three functional areas – Effort Reporting, Service and Recharge Center rate reviews, and F&A and fringe rate proposal development. In addition to providing financial information and data, this position will be instrumental in assisting MAA team members and campus partners in the analysis process and determining their informational needs based on their respective goals and objectives. Responsibilities include analytical support for data needs related to institutional reporting such as project development, project management, advanced business intelligence, data mining, risk analysis, and the development of complex data visualizations for metrics and trend analytics.
Position Complexities:
This Senior Financial Data Analyst position is responsible for planning, developing, applying, and maintaining various types of computer and software technologies in support of MAA’s department needs for providing compliance oversight and guidance, ensuring adherence to Uniform Guidance 2 C.F.R. Part 200 and responding to Cognizant Agency data requests. Knowledge of enterprise-wide financial reporting practices and technical knowledge of institutional data is needed in this role. System responsibilities include a large number of non-integrated systems (financial, personnel, space, etc.) and knowledge regarding each system is critical. Other activities include managing data integrity and validation. The most complex aspect of this position is the experience required to develop rich and informative data strategies (project data planning, complex SQL queries, data validation, ETL processes, and non-central system data federations) from   all major data domains of the UW. Developing such strategies requires strategic analytic and interpersonal skills and the ability to work with a diverse community of executives and data experts across the institution.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Program Development and Management
Lead the design, development, implementation, and support of codified data strategies for financial and other data sources related to the MMA’s functional responsibilities, using Excel, T-SQL Server analysis tools, Tableau, Access and/or other similar applications to extract and analyze large volumes of data, to include formatting to suit various audiences related business intelligence technologies.
Analyze detailed knowledge of data mining within UW Financial Systems and understand how to interpret and use data to produce viable and accurate financial reports.
Consider UW funding sources to analyze total sources and uses of funds at an organizational level as well as at a more granular unit level
Develop, implement and/or modify manual or reporting/tracking processes to address specific unit needs
Develop, maintain and modify financial systems, databases, and spreadsheets. This includes accounting systems and Workday HR/Payroll system
Help build and continuously enhance financial models in excel based on operating metrics, including scenario and sensitivity analysis based on different factors
Recommend and implement process improvement measures and identify critical financial as well as non-financial risks and advise for those risks
Understand varying operational models quickly and apply financial analysis expertise to assist in decision making
Responsible for financial data management and analysis primarily focused on supporting UW Finance
Excellent skills in gathering, analyzing, and reporting financial data, often originating from multiple sources
Develop recommendations, written reports, and present data to senior management
Proactive business approach focused on meeting current and future needs where data and knowledge derived from data will play a critical role in executive level decision making
Work directly with key University systems personnel, including executive-level data custodians, to consistently improve data strategies related to financial accounting, financial forecasting, and financial audit procedures
Performs risk & opportunity analysis and provide potential solutions with the business unit to develop recovery plans
Review and provide feedback to business units on their strategic and risk management plans and objectives
Support day-to-day operations data/reporting analysis to reconcile data and resolve data challenges

Administration
Manage the delivery of information; design and program SQL on an ad hoc basis to meet user requirements.
Represent enterprise financial data strategies on LEAN initiatives and Kaizen projects that involve the flow and collection of data
Provide high-level client services training, support, and problem resolution for MAA staff members. This includes proactive outreach to foster and facilitate data understanding, tool usage, business information needs, and feedback.
Create content and ability to present data to support program, financial, and operations review
Develop an understanding of varying operational models quickly and apply financial analysis expertise to assist in decision making
Maintain, and publish project plan, project timelines, and performance
Interpret data from various sources to compile a comprehensive picture of the overall business requirement documents, process mapping, and process narratives.
Lead metrics and financial performance reviews during integration

Other duties as assigned
Train and cross train staff within UW Finance
Lead Responsibilities:
Lead and conduct requirements gathering, analysis and design across various data domains
Lead codification strategies for data across the MAA functional areas - including primary authorship for SQL
Lead data expert for CRIS

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Informatics, or Management Information Systems or related field and 5 years of experience in related field.
Equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and skills have been acquired may substitute for degree.
Advanced techniques in data presentation using resources that include but are not limited to work in Excel, Access, MS SQL Server Data Tools, and Tableau
Advanced working knowledge of financial and accounting practices related to standard financial reporting
Demonstrated knowledge and working experience with LEAN philosophy and agile project participation for operational effectiveness
Advanced working knowledge of FAS / FIN, WorkDay HRP and ERP systems, InVision, CRIS and related operational data stores
Experience performing progressively more complex tasks in support of MAA-wide data analysis and systems management.
Extensive knowledge of data, data structures used to store business data, and business (subject area) processes.
Demonstrated experience in customer relationship management including scope and expectation management.
Demonstrated knowledge and working experience with, but not limited to, MS Windows, enterprise-wide relational databases (SQL Server, Oracle, and MySQL), formal data modeling techniques, and scripting languages.
Strong skills and experience in computer systems and software, especially in the areas of data warehouses, relational and non- relational databases, and various methods of data analysis.
Ability to work effectively with University systems and business partners at the executive level for the development of MAA data strategies
Ability to function independently and effectively and as part of a team.
Strong oral and written communication skills.
Strong customer service skills necessary to work with financial information users at all levels; from a summarized strategic perspective to a detailed operational one.
Capacity to function effectively in a complex, changing environment.
Knowledge of technology must be at a level necessary to develop analytic queries and tools to provide financial information to users.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
5+ years’ experience designing, building, and maintaining SQL Server, Oracle or MySQL relational databases.
Experience with ETL protocol design and management
Experience with Python and R
Experience with dashboard reporting.
Industry experience in business intelligence and data analytics trends and technologies.
