This position is open to be being a hybrid position with a flexible schedule available within standard business hours . Overtime may be required during peak processing times.

Payroll Services at The University of Texas at Austin is responsible for producing and distributing payroll for approximately 29,000 employees. Payroll processes monthly, semi-monthly and off-cycle payrolls for employees of the university. Our Benefits and Deductions Teams are responsible for deducting, remitting and reporting payroll deductions and other payroll information to UT System Administration, state and federal agencies, and third-party vendors. We ensure compliance with federal, state and university laws and guidelines.

Purpose

Serve as a member of the Finance Team in Payroll Services, primarily to provide analysis of financial systems involving the recording, examination, maintaining, and reporting of financial/payroll data.


Responsibilities

  • Prepare, examine, analyze, maintain, and reconcile all payroll accounts to the general ledger balance on a monthly basis. Identify and track outstanding transactions to ensure financial integrity and assess accuracy, completeness, and conformance of employee records and departmental charges. Follow up with payroll users to clear discrepancies, prepare adjusting journal entries, payroll adjustments and refunds, as needed. Provide monthly status to Finance Manager.
  • Serve as Payroll liaison for financial audits and compliance efforts with internal and external entities. Serve as Payroll liaison for Open Records Requests and Subpoenas. Coordinate the gathering of supporting documentation and work with payroll team members and leadership to review, respond, and resolve audit findings and recommendations.
  • Analyze payroll related employer costs and propose pooled fringe rate annually, taking into account actual employer costs and over/under analysis from prior years. Work with federal consultant to draft pooled fringe rate proposal. Answer departmental questions related to pooled fringes.
  • Develop, implement, modify, and document recordkeeping and accounting processes, making use of current technology in order to ensure appropriate internal controls. Analyze departmental financial operations and make recommendations for policy and/or procedural changes. Analyze fiscal accounting and financial systems. Interpret and ensure compliance with federal, state, and University policies.
  • Work with Cash Management, Accounting and Financial Management, and the Budget Office to ensure payroll and fringe benefit expenditures are appropriately categorized and reported each payroll cycle.   
  • Other duties as assigned.


Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance. Experience in financial reporting and analysis. Advanced Excel skills. Demonstrated problem-solving skills, flexibility, and attention to detail. At least two years of experience in the accounting field.

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.


Preferred Qualifications

Master's degree in Accounting or Finance or CPA. Experience with financial audits. Experience working in university environment, knowledge of DEFINE and University’s legacy payroll procedures. Experience working with databases and Microsoft Access.


Salary Range

$62,000
