Overview

The School of Environmental and Biological Sciences, located on the George H. Cook Campus, is one of the largest schools of Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey. We pursue excellence in research, teaching, and outreach in areas of study that address the biological spectrum from molecules to ecosystems. Our emphasis is on both the fundamental sciences and the social and human dimensions. We offer 21 undergraduate majors, including plant and animal sciences, microbiology, biotechnology, agriculture and food systems, landscape architecture, food and nutritional sciences, ecology and evolution, marine science and oceanography, environmental sciences and meteorology, human ecology, entomology, and environmental economics.
In addition to instruction in the classroom, field, and laboratory, our students have opportunities for experiential learning on and off campus, including a growing emphasis on international experiences through short- and long-term study abroad. Students also have access to a robust program of applied research and outreach hosted by the New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station laboratories, farms, business incubators, and marine stations throughout the state.

Posting Summary

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Senior EOF Counselor for the Educational Opportunity Fund (EOF) Program at the School of Environmental and Biological Sciences (SEBS). The Senior EOF Counselor for SEBS EOF reports to the EOF Manager/Assistant Director and is responsible for assuring successful levels of student academic achievement and graduation for an assigned caseload of SEBS EOF undergraduate students.

Among the key duties of this position are the following:
• Aids students in their personal adjustment and transition to the collegiate environment.
• Provides orientation to the campus culture.
• Makes student referrals to appropriate university offices and outside agencies.
• Advocates for the EOF program and students.
• Initiates programming to enhance student retention in STEM majors.
• Provides academic, personal, emotional and career advisement, in addition to facilitating student success workshops/seminars.
• Monitors all students emotional concerns, employing effective counseling strategies to promote academic achievement, enhanced performance and reduce student attrition; documents services rendered to students.
• Assists program administration with identification of and outreach to department and agencies that will assist with addressing emotional well-being of all students.
• Renders a comprehensive network of counseling activities that relate directly to the unique needs of the SEBS EOF student population;
• Initiates and maintains collaborations with university and outside agencies to promote emotional well-being and overall student retention.
• Develops intervention strategies for college success while serving as part of the Rutgers, SEBS and EOF administrative team.

Minimum Education and Experience

• Master’s degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience, preferable training in substantive counseling, teaching, or related student development experiences in a college setting with underrepresented college students is key.

Certifications/Licenses
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Experience with college admissions, financial aid systems, recruitment, and outreach, working with students from economically and educationally disadvantaged backgrounds.
• Experience in student students affairs working with students enrolled in STEM majors.
• Strong listening, written and verbal skills with the ability to work on group projects and team-oriented tasks are necessary.
• Extensive experience with web-based applications, telework software and MS Office application –Excel, PowerPoint, and Word.
• The Senior EOF Counselor will be knowledgeable of current STEM retention initiatives for underrepresented student populations.
• Knowledge in this area is required to further the S.E.B.S. and EOF program goal of increasing its male student population and developing programs that support male student retention and graduation from STEM majors.
• Knowledgeable of current academic trends in student retention, particularly for first-year, probation, and transfer students.

Preferred Qualifications

• Master’s Degree in Social Work, Psychology, Higher Education Administration, and Student/Academic Affairs with knowledge of Higher Education admissions and financial aid systems. Active NJ Social Work Certification/Licensure.

Equipment Utilized

• Familiarity with Zoom, WebEx, Canvas, Infographics, and social media platforms – Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

• Ability to work in a dynamic environment that requires evening and weekend hours, particularly during the months of July and August.
