Job Summary

Harvard University Press seeks an entrepreneurial, experienced Senior Editor to acquire 15-20 new books each year in economics, law, and technology. Reporting to the Editorial Director, the Senior Editor will build a strong list of books on topics of interest to both professionals and general readers, across a wide range of topics.


Position Description

The Senior Editor closely monitors innovative research by establishing contacts with scholars and other experts, reading widely and deeply in the literature, attending professional conferences, and traveling to campuses throughout the United States. He or she maintains a network of prospective authors, along with agents and other publishing professionals; commissions new works of broad appeal and significance; and selectively solicits and evaluates proposals for trade books, professional books, and cutting-edge research monographs. 

The Senior Editor shapes proposals and manuscripts; coordinates contract negotiations; arranges for peer review of manuscripts under contract; works closely with authors to ensure that manuscripts are well written and contractual obligations are met. The Senior Editor presents new projects to the university-wide faculty board at the monthly Syndics meeting. He or she prepares fact (TI) sheets, designs briefs, solicits endorsements, and presents projects at marketing launch meetings.


Basic Qualifications

Undergraduate degree required, with an advanced degree in a relevant field preferred. Minimum 8 years of publishing experience required, including at least 8 years of book-acquisition experience, preferably in economics, law, and/or technology. Other relevant qualifications, such as academic or institutional appointments, will be considered. 


Additional Information

PLEASE NOTE: This position may start hybrid (some on-campus/some remote work), with the transition to full-on campus in Cambridge if required by the department.  Work options for this role will be discussed during the interview process.
