Job Description

The Sr. Director serves as steward of the Rio Reimagined initiative and stakeholder partnership providing strategic planning, convening, and facilitation leadership in support and advancement of the initiative’s vision and mission.  This is in alignment with Arizona State University’s Charter which includes the “fundamental responsibility for the economic, social, cultural and overall health of the communities it serves” and, in particular, a commitment to positively “leveraging place.” 

ASU is committed to the long-term success of the Rio Reimagined initiative, its benefit to the community and region, and its relevance to matters of the environment, equity, economic development.  In collaboration with municipalities, tribes, federal, state, and county government, NGOs, and other entities, the university has dedicated significant resources to this effort and intends to continue to evolve the project reflective of current opportunities and future needs.

Essential Duties

  • Provide thought leadership, partnership cultivation, planning, and strategic guidance for the initiative.  
  • Identify and leverage the skills, insights, and resources of ASU faculty, researchers, and institutes to advance aligned partnership and university mission and goals; monitor and measure their engagement to ensure successful outcomes. 
  • Provide oversight and consult with external stakeholders to evaluate ASU contributions to date, project gaps, and how the institution can better serve the project. 
  • Provide oversight and coordination of the initiative in concert with the Federal Urban Waters Partnership Rio Ambassador to ensure optimal impact and support from and for the Rio Reimagined partnership; 
  • Identify opportunities to improve and expand the regional Rio Reimagined partnership by engaging with participating organizations and recruiting new partners.  
  • In addition and consideration to grant opportunities identified by the Federal Urban Waters Partnership (FUWP) Rio Ambassador, provide information and impact guidance for prospective grant funding to Rio Partnership community members including the identification of funding opportunities, convening appropriate stakeholders, assistance/collaboration in applying for grants, and successful management and implementation of ASU partnered grants. 
  • Work to effectively engage stakeholders at all levels including the initiative’s partnership stakeholders, municipal leadership, community organizations, residents, and university administration to represent and advance the initiative. 
  • Participate, and when appropriate, oversee community, municipal, governmental, and special events to reinforce and represent the initiative and ASU’s commitment 
  • Conduct regular communications and updates with the Executive Director of the ASU University City Exchange to confirm project impact, alignment, and required resources to be committed on the part of the university.
  • Meet with ASU administration, as required, to provide updates on the progress of the initiative, the integration of ASU assets, the impact in the community, as well as required resources, and future opportunities; this includes the preparation of progress summaries, presentations, and administrative reports which will be useful to external stakeholders, as well.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in a related field AND ten (10) years of related experience which includes five (5) years of management/supervisory experience; OR, any equivalent combination of education and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.


Desired Qualifications

  • Evidence in advanced degree in a topic relevant to the project is anticipated.  Given the complexity and breadth of Rio, the university is open to expertise in urban planning, landscape architecture, environmental studies, public policy, law and/or other related areas.
  • Experience applying for, implementing, and reporting on grant funded projects.
  • Knowledge and strategic understanding of federal, regional, and local funding sources
  • Demonstrated professional experience managing project teams, consultants, and deliverables for large scale civic project conceptualization
  • Experience working with community groups, public officials, and municipal agencies is essential.
  • Evidence of interpersonal skills and capacity to coordinate knowledgeable and stakeholder groups
  • Experience in using verbal, presentation, and written communications skills.
  • Experience in using organizational skills.
  • Experience with large scale planning and visioning projects desired.
  • Experience/technical skills and capacity to utilize digital data and visualization tools desired.

  • Accordingly, the position requires both a collaborative orientation and the ability to work independently.
  • Establishing a work plan, integrating with the larger departmental objectives, and meeting deadlines for deliverables is required.  
  • Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding and manipulating a computer mouse.
  • Required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work.
  • Occasional bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds.
  • Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities, which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts.
  • Ability to clearly communicate to perform essential functions.
