Job Description
The Senior Director, Regional Development provides strategic leadership for a team of 8 – 12 front-line fundraisers (Regional Directors) assigned to the region, and ensures that the individual leadership prospect pool is cultivated to its full philanthropic potential with the mission to support the financial needs of the University. This role reports to the Executive Regional Director of Development.
This key individual will represent the University to internal and external constituencies, and help develop and implement the overall fundraising strategy for their area of responsibility. While guiding the team with insight, mentorship, business acumen, and best practices, this role will also be responsible for managing a small portfolio of leadership benefactors.
Core Responsibilities
Team Leadership:
  • Provide mentorship, coaching, and on-going training for new and existing employees.
  • Create a culture of continuous learning and development.
  • Support the development of a comprehensive human resources program for development focused on recruitment, orientation, professional development, career tracking, performance management, succession planning, and retention.
  • Collaborate with the Executive Regional Director to create a strategic direction for the region, set ambitious goals, and lead a high performing team.
  • Foster a competitive, collaborative, compassionate, and fun culture that promotes teamwork within the region and across the Development department.
  • Facilitate interactions with various internal University groups, including officers, deans, department heads and program directors.
  • Work as a true partner with other Development leadership and support teams to build trust, teamwork and best in class results.
  • Align the team’s goals and plans with the divisional strategic plan, and conduct rigorous assessment to measure progress. Work with each regional director in the assigned region to develop annual plans. perform regular reviews, and support their professional development.
  • Manage strategic target initiatives and accurate monthly forecasts.
  • Understand and monitor the educational and economic environment and changing field trends in which the University must compete and operate, including technical development, individual donor issues, and other factors which may impact the philanthropic journey.

Individual Fundraising:
  • Cultivate, solicit and maximize philanthropy of a small portfolio of leadership benefactors.
  • Close large specific projects and gift opportunities for the University as requested.

Financial Management:
  • Work closely with the Executive Regional Director and Director of Finance to effectively manage and steward all budget resources entrusted to the development department, including operating and campaign monies.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • 5 + years of professional experience
  • Deep commitment to Notre Dame’s mission and core values
  • Experience with and evidence of creating and leading high-performing teams (with or without formal leadership title)
  • Ability to build relationships, collaborate, influence and earn the respect and confidence of your team, your colleagues, and senior leadership in the Offices of Development, Finance, Human Resources, Alumni Association, and the University at large.
  • Highly motivated: Ability to thrive and consistently drive improvement and achieve results, in a fast-paced, changing environment

Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous experience & success in sales, closing complex agreements, and/or working directly with donors and benefactors
  • Formal team leadership/management experience
  • Masters of Business Administration
