Position Overview

The Senior Director of Infrastructure at The University of Kansas is a strategic leadership role responsible for overseeing the planning, development, and management of the university’s technology infrastructure. This position plays a pivotal role in ensuring the reliability, security, and scalability of the IT systems that support the university’s research, teaching, and administrative functions.

Job Description

20% - Infrastructure Strategy & Planning:

  • Develop and execute a comprehensive infrastructure strategy aligned with the university’s academic and research missions.
  • Evaluate emerging technologies and trends to enhance and optimize the university’s infrastructure landscape.
20% Infrastructure Management:
  • Lead the design, implementation, and maintenance of the university’s IT infrastructure, including data centers, networks, servers, and storage systems.
  • Ensure the performance, availability, and resilience of infrastructure components to support academic and research activities.
15% Cloud Services and Hybrid Solutions:
  • Drive the university’s cloud strategy, including the adoption and integration of cloud services to support teaching, research, and administrative functions.
  • Explore and implement hybrid solutions to leverage the benefits of both on-premises and cloud infrastructure.
15% Team Leadership:
  • Build and lead a high-performing infrastructure team within KU IT, providing guidance, mentorship, and professional development opportunities.
  • Foster a culture of collaboration, innovation, and service excellence within the infrastructure teams and across KU IT.
10% Vendor Management:
  • Evaluate, select, and manage relationships with external vendors and service providers to support infrastructure initiatives and projects.
  • Aid in the negotiation of contracts and service-level agreements to ensure alignment with the university’s academic and research objectives.
10% Budgeting and Resource Allocation:
  • Develop and manage the infrastructure budget, ensuring effective allocation of resources to meet organizational needs.
  • Provide input into the overall IT budget and investment decisions.
5% Security and Compliance:
  • Collaborate with the Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) to establish and enforce security policies and practices.
  • Ensure infrastructure compliance with relevant regulations and standards, including those specific to the education and research sectors.
5% Other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree and seven years of relevant professional experience.
  • Five years of progressive supervisory or management experience of large teams.
  • Excellent written communication skills as evidenced by application materials. Strong time-management and organizational skills, with a record of being flexible, accurate, detail-oriented, reliable, and self-motivated as evidenced by work history.

  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in business, computer science, telecommunications, networking, engineering, or other computer-related field.
  • Experience with storage systems, virtualization, and data center operations, including compute and storage for complex enterprise systems.
  • Experience with: ITIL and service-oriented philosophies, with Shared Services (multiple institutions sharing IT resources), and with formal IT governance.
  • Experience with IT Business Continuity planning.
  • Demonstrated ability to be highly self-directed, detailed-oriented, and have a high attention to accuracy as evidenced by work history.
