Position Summary/Purpose of Position:
Reporting to the Chief Development Officer, the Senior Director of Development will be responsible for helping to meet the fundraising objectives of the Robert H. Smith School of Business at the University of Maryland. The Senior Director will actively manage a portfolio of 75-100 major gift and principal prospects (ability to give $50,000 or more), and will make at least 100 visits per year while raising $1M+ annually (15+ major gift asks). The Senior Director will also supervise 2 major gift officers.
The Senior Director will apply knowledge and understanding of the University of Maryland and the Smith School, its traditions, programs, campus issues, needs and priorities to the development process. They must be able to persuasively discuss academic programs, philanthropic opportunities and priorities with prospective donors and volunteers to successfully solicit and close gifts on behalf of the school.
Collaboration with key stakeholders in the Smith School, including the dean and center/program directors, campus colleagues, faculty and administrators is essential to the success of this role. The Senior Director will work with fundraising colleagues in University Relations and other campus schools and units, to develop strategies for joint solicitation and to negotiate differences.
This position must be able to travel 50% of the time and work evenings and weekends as needed.

Minimum Qualifications:
Education:
  • Bachelor’s degree.

Experience:
  • A minimum of 7 or more years of successful progressive development/fundraising experience with a successful track record of closing five and six-figure gifts preferably within a university or college setting.
  • Successful candidates must have experience identifying, cultivating, and directly soliciting major gifts.  
  • Management experience.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • A broad understanding of higher education and commitment to the values and role of a public research university; strong working knowledge of academic development.
  • Demonstrated ability to close six-figure gifts, with a preference for experience with seven-figure gifts.
  • Ability to work with volunteers, senior administration, and faculty.
  • Ability to exhibit strong interpersonal skills that will enable them to work well with diverse groups of constituents and colleagues.
  • Excellent written and oral communication and critical thinking skills.
  • Ability to plan and think strategically and to prioritize successfully.
  • Ability to coach a team to achieve results.

  • Salary Range is $141,956 – $177,446 commensurate with education and experience.

Physical Demands
Traditional office environment. Sedentary work. Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.
