Job Overview

The Senior Director of Communications and Marketing is responsible for enhancing the reputation of the McDonough School of Business by leading the Office of Marketing and Communications’ editorial team. With direct oversight of media relations, rankings, content strategy, and executive communications, and supervision of a team that is responsible for content development, publications, center and initiative strategic communications planning, social media, and video production, the Senior Director will raise awareness of the school among prospective and current students, prospective and current faculty and staff, alumni, donors, thought leaders, and the general business community.

Work Interactions and Work Mode Designation

Reporting to the Associate Dean and Chief Marketing and Communications Officer (CMCO), the Senior Director of Communications and Marketing serves as the senior manager in charge when the CMCO is unavailable.

They work across all internal McDonough departments to develop and execute communications strategies; and develop strong working relationships with key administrators, program directors, and faculty within the McDonough School of Business, as well as communications professionals throughout the University, including the Office of Strategic Communications and the Office of Advancement.

The Senior Director works closely on communications with the CMCO and Dean; the Dean’s Chief of Staff; and the school’s senior leadership. Within the Marketing and Communications team, they work closely to support other marketing efforts and the ongoing initiatives of the various programs within the McDonough School of Business; and coordinate consistently with external agencies to enhance ongoing media campaigns and program marketing goals.

Additionally, the Senior Director promotes the school’s brand off campus by developing professional working relationships with representatives of national and local publications and media outlets, professional organizations, and key influencers.

On a daily basis, the Senior Director supervises Associate Director of Marketing and Communications (alumni magazine and publications), the Associate Director of Communications (center and initiative communications and media relations), Social Media and Multimedia Manager (social media and video production), and the Communications Manager (content creation and newsletters), as well as writers and external consultants.

As well, they work closely with the Director of Integrated Marketing and Communications and the Director of Events and Brand Experience within the Marketing and Communications team.

This position’s work mode has been designated as Hybrid . Requirements and Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, public relations, English, business, marketing, liberal arts or a related field - preference for a Master’s degree
  • At least 6 years in public relations, journalism, broadcasting, communications, marketing or a related area
  • Experience in media relations, as well as excellent editing and written/oral communications skills
  • Experience supervising others
  • Strong organizational, leadership, and communications skills required. 
  • Good judgment and demonstrable interpersonal skills and flexibility
  • Ability to work on deadline

Preferred Qualification

Experience or knowledge of management education trends and issues
