Job Description

The Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication is seeking a Senior Director of Marketing and Strategic Communication to lead the organization’s communications, branding and marketing efforts. Reporting to the executive director of strategic initiatives and diversity, this position leads efforts to elevate Cronkite’s profile and steward its reputation with internal and external audiences including, but not limited to faculty, staff, students, alumni, media, influencers, prospective students and families, donors, board members, and friends. The senior director is responsible for a team of professionals who plan, develop, and produce strategic communications—deployed across multiple platforms and channels (web, video, print, social media, editorial, photography, and broadcast media)—that touch on every aspect of the organization including undergraduate and graduate recruitment (immersion and online), alumni communication, event management and promotion, and internal communication. The senior director identifies and develops compelling stories that reflect key themes and school priorities, engages with external media to promote school achievements, and advances and protects the Cronkite brand and reputation. The senior director will oversee marketing, communications, creative services, web, social media, and events personnel, manage communications workflows, lead crisis communications efforts, and ensure strategic alignment among all internal and external communications. The director is ultimately responsible for the school's marketing activities and oversees the development and delivery of a fully integrated marketing and communications strategy for Cronkite.

Essential Duties

  • Develops strategy and oversees execution of all publicity and marketing for the Cronkite School. This includes development and production of key messages, themes, and visual branding; coordination of all publicity efforts—paid and organic; creation/design of printed materials and advertisements; media purchases/placements; digital and social media; press releases; quarterly magazines and annual report; media relations and event promotions.
  • Develops strategy and oversees execution for gaining local and national recognition of the Cronkite School and thought leaders among our faculty and staff.
  • Develops long- and short-range goals to strategically align the efforts of media relations and marketing with strategic goals of the Cronkite School, in collaboration with ASU Enterprise Brand Strategy and Management and university leadership.
  • Builds and maintains digital marketing analytics and reports, to predict trends, create forecasts and measure effectiveness of digital marketing investments and activities.
  • Develops and recommends audience development and engagement strategies and oversees benchmarking and performance tracking. This includes oversight of social media communication to engage audiences through creative storytelling and strategic content.
  • Plans and efficiently administers the school's marketing budget.
  • Oversees business development activities including branding and strategic planning for external presentations, event invitations, etc.
  • Identifies compelling stories that reflect key themes and organizational priorities and moves quickly and effectively to tell them.
  • Ensures consistency in style, language, and design of all communication.
  • Develops strong collaborative working relationships within the school and other academic units to coordinate stories and other media relations activities to ensure consistency in messaging.
  • Supports the content needs of the recruitment function.
  • Provides oversight of websites and social media supporting Cronkite.
  • Leverages ASU’s CRM to effectively engage all partners and stakeholders.
  • Shares weekly project status reports.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in a related field AND ten (10) years of related experience which includes five (5) years of management/supervisory experience; OR, any equivalent combination of education and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

Working Environment

  • Office located at 555 North Central Avenue, Phoenix, AZ.
  • Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding, and manipulating a computer mouse.
  • Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts.
