Job Overview

McDonough Career Services comprises multiple highly specialized teams dedicated to supporting the career aspirations of all McDonough Students and Alumni. These aspirations include successful employment outcomes, career promotion campaigns, executive coaching, leadership development, and global executive presence enhancement.

Career advancement through job search, promotion, or entrepreneurial venture is critical to the mission of the business school and of utmost importance to the students. Student satisfaction with McDonough Career Services initiatives and support is carefully measured during enrollment periods. Accordingly, student career successes figure prominently in the school’s strategic efforts to achieve top-tier status.

The Senior Director of Career Curricula & Communications advances key strategic relationships across McDonough and develops team-wide initiatives that facilitate the achievement of overall student preparedness and career outcomes. 

The Senior Director will also:

  • Take direct accountability for strategic communications to our diverse set of stakeholders (prospective students & employers, current students & employers, alumni, and faculty/staff). S/he also brings leadership in acting as a representative to inter-departmental initiatives and develops relationships to support and advance the McDonough Career Center’s mission across the school (e.g. McDonough website, Admissions events).
  • Serve as an external liaison for the McDonough Career Center in a development role for MBA and Grad/Exec Admissions events, where s/he will deliver service offerings and career outcomes to prospective students in person or virtually. These presentations include groups of 20-100 prospective students who are considering the full-time and flexible, part-time academic degree programs and are interested in the Career Center’s outcomes and services.
  • Identify needs Across McDonough Career Center teams (Executive Education, MBA Programs, Master of Science in Management, and the Undergraduate Program) and take initiative among senior staff to create effective career curricula and communications products that advance the needs and desired career outcomes of those student, employer, and alumni populations.
  • Direct and lead the Peer Advisor program, including hiring, training, and managing 2nd year MBA students who offer peer-to-peer career advising support.
  • Manage one full-time employee who directly reports to this position.

Work Interactions

The Senior Director reports directly to the Associate Dean, McDonough Career Services. Key internal stakeholders across the Programs with whom the Senior Director works closely include: the Admissions teams, Program Office teams, MSB Office of Marketing & Communications, and Alumni Relations teams. They frequently interface with students through coaching interactions and the delivery of group career programs. Outside of Georgetown, the Senior Director provides representation at Admissions events, Diversity events, professional associations, and alumni networking receptions.

Requirements and Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Higher Education, Business, Human Resources, or a related discipline
  • 7-10 years of progressive experience in Career Development (preferably in a business school setting), Recruiting, or Human Resources field
  • Career development expertise with specific insights into job search and promotions strategy, tools and practice
  • Exceptional executive-level presentation design and delivery skills
  • Expert interpersonal and workplace diplomacy skills, and knowledge of effectively conveying career services messages to key stakeholders; high-level competency with integrated communications
  • Strong public speaking ability, and excellent professional writing and editing skills both to inform and influence across digital and traditional print media
  • Ability to think strategically and develop new programs to address the needs of stakeholders; proven leadership
  • Interdisciplinary mindset, and ability to positively represent the career services among both internal and external audiences; strategic and innovative and focus on holistic, systemic solutions; and demonstrated ability to collaborate and deliver results by working with others
  • Experience utilizing virtual content delivery platforms and other digital systems, including but not limited to Zoom, WebEx, Qualtrics, Salesforce, Basecamp, and Dreamweaver
  • Demonstrated ability to provide thoughtful, developmental career advising in one-on-one, small, and large group settings
  • Strong leadership and advising skills
  • Understanding of adult learning styles
  • Competent with online media, including databases, inter and intranet, social media sites, and campus recruiting software
  • Excellent Microsoft Office skills, particularly with Word, PowerPoint, and Excel

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Higher Education, Business, Human Resources or related discipline
  • 2 years of college-level instruction/teaching experience
  • Extensive experience in course development and deployment, knowledge of adult learning instruction and techniques
  • Previous use of Drupal, Dreamweaver and familiarity with HTML
  • Knowledge of PDF form builder
  • Career Coaching certification
