 Job Overview

The Senior Director manages the daily operations of Business for Impact (BFI) , ensuring quality and timely execution of all programs and projects of the center. Working with minimal guidance from the Executive Director, the Senior Director handles responsibilities that include personnel management, program leadership, financial management, and fundraising for the center, which raises $2M - $3M annually from outside sources of funding to operate.

The Senior Director’s activities include but are not limited to:

  • Managing the operational and administrative personnel of the center, including staff, temps, and contractors
  • Developing strategic and operational plans and financial forecasts; and managing budgets to ensure that the center’s expenses are in line with revenues
  • Working with the Executive Director and Project Directors on developing new business opportunities, including raising grants, gifts, sponsorships, and service contract revenue for the center
  • Liaising with donors, corporate partners, the BFI Advisory Group, and other key stakeholders providing financial resources to support the center; coordinating and communicating with BFI Program Directors; integrating DEI into BFI’s mission and work - including HR and hiring practices; managing all independent contractor relationships; interfacing with MSB and University HR, Finance and Comms; interviewing, hiring, and on-boarding new staff; and representing BFI at events and conferences within and outside the University.
  • Advising the Executive Director on key strategic and operational matters for the initiative.

Furthermore, the Senior Director leads Student Sustainability Experiential Learning programs for BFI – which includes designing and implementing with the BFI operations team all co-curricular / experiential learning opportunities for MSB students in the social impact, ESG, and sustainability space. Sample activities include leading the annual Fall student orientation session; building partnerships with external organizations to create internships and consulting projects for our students; leading the recruiting process, reviewing hundreds of student applications, and matching students with hands-on learning experiences. This includes creating more opportunities for undergraduate students to engage in sustainability learning experiences in the MSB, coordinating with the co-presidents of MSB’s Net Impact chapter, and interacting with BFI alumni to keep them updated on BFI’s work, and working with them on efforts to market the program to new and prospective students.

As well, the Senior Director leads and/or project manages special projects with external partners, including case studies and research and analysis reports. As part of this work, the Senior Director coordinates with the partners and the project team; contributes to research and analysis; and helps to draft, edit, and present deliverables.

Work Interactions and Work Mode Designation

Reporting to the Business for Impact Executive Director, the Senior Director manages the Business for Impact Operations Team, including the Assistant Director (finance and contracts), Assistant Director of Events + Marketing, and Program Coordinator.

The Senior Director also works directly with other Business for Impact personnel, including staff and contractors, to support planning and implementation of BFI’s programs. As well, they interact directly with other key stakeholders in the MSB and Georgetown community, including the Dean’s office, the Finance and Administrative team, the Program Office, other centers - e.g. , Entrepreneurship, Sustainable Business Initiative, Steers, and Psaros - and the GU Office of Community Engagement.

Finally, the Senior Director takes the lead on collaborations with external organizations, providing co-curricular learning opportunities to Georgetown students.

Requirements and Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Business Management or equivalent
  • At least15 years professional experience, including at least 7 years of senior operations and personnel management experience
  • Deep experience in social impact work, as well as direct work experience in the nonprofit and corporate sectors
  • Experience with successful business development, fundraising and other revenue-generation work for nonprofits from philanthropic, corporate and earned revenue sources
  • Experience navigating complex academic institutional systems and demonstrable ability to excel in large complex bureaucracies
  • Enthusiasm and willingness to work in a university environment and leverage its strengths to support development of students
  • Excellent written and communication abilities with a demonstrated record of publishing different types of writing, such as academic articles, research papers, opinion pieces and blogs, and other field-leading pieces
  • A demonstrated record of delivering high-level presentations and interacting with senior level C-suite stakeholders. a robust network of people and organizations engaged in and/or supporting public interest work
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision to meet deadlines and produce high-quality results in an environment with competing priorities and deadlines
  • Strong experience planning and managing complex projects, and establishing and maintaining effective collaborative relationships with individuals and organizations across functional units
  • Demonstrated experience managing teams, both supporting their development and growth, while also ensuring accountability
  • Proactive, open communication practices, accounting for a distributed team with varied working hours and styles
