Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The Office of University Communications is responsible for the strategic management of the University’s overall public relations and reputation management activities. The department provides leadership, counsel and services to over 200 communicators across campus and works with those communicators to ensure a unified campus-wide communications strategy. Areas within University Communications include: Executive Communications, Media Relations, Visual Communications & Production, Content Strategy, Social Media, Issues Management, Public Records, the UNC-Chapel Hill Visitors Center, and UNC Creative.
Position Summary
University Communications’ goal is to communicate effectively and market the institution’s outstanding educational experience, its impact on the quality of life in the state; and its prominent role on the national and international stage.
Reporting to the Director of UNC Creative, the Senior Designer and Digital Specialist will play a lead role in designing print and digital materials for the University. This position will act as a senior designer for the team by taking on some of the larger, more design-intensive and complex projects, and especially those with a digital focus. This work will translate communications opportunities and challenges into well-designed products that visually communicate the brand for the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. UNC Creative’s designers are responsible for producing visual and digital materials for a wide variety of clients – ranging from the Chancellor’s Office and many of the schools and units on campus to the UNC System. The position is highly involved in strategy development and the overall creative process with regard to large campaigns. This includes research and integration of modern elements and staying current with a modern aesthetic.
Additionally, the Senior Designer and Digital Specialist will provide mentorship to other designers and educate the UNC Creative team about the field of digital and accessible design practices. This position will become the expert on the team for digital design implementation and process and will work closely with the University Art Director and Brand Manager to ensure all digital work created by the team follows best practices in an ever-evolving field.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
High school diploma or equivalency and two years of visual/graphic arts experience related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
* Applicants should have computer skills on a Mac platform and be familiar with Adobe CC (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop).
* Demonstrated mastery of design principles through a portfolio of print or electronic products.
* Strong design, layout and typography skills.
* Thorough knowledge of the principles and methods of planning, designing and producing visually appealing products that communicate a clear message to target audiences.
* Ability to communicate well with clients across campus and with printers and other vendors.
* Ability to take an assignment or complex project and see it through the design and production processes with no supervision.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Demonstrated experience in leading projects through the entire lifecycle, from design inception to production execution.
