Job Description

The biggest social, economic and political challenges affecting people in low- and middle-income countries are multi-faceted and complex. The Penn Development Research Initiative (PDRI) brings together faculty and graduate students from seven schools across campus who have interests in international development. PDRI seeks to foster inter-disciplinary research by harnessing the extensive experience of its affiliates in both basic social science and program evaluation, drawing upon diverse disciplinary perspectives, and utilizing multiple methodological approaches. PDRI serves as a launch pad for pursuing extramurally-funded research that includes collaborations with international NGOs, local NGOs, and government agencies while serving as an intellectual community for Penn faculty and graduate students conducting research in development countries settings.

Duties:

The Senior Data Research Coordinator will assist with data analysis tasks (including geo-spatial and statistical inference) as well as data management (cleaning, merging, transformations), data scraping, and data visualization. The Senior Data Research Coordinator will further help with creating figures, tables, and maps that will be used in academic papers, policy briefs, PDRI’s periodic newsletters and PDRI’s website. The data coordinator will also help to program surveys into survey software such as Qualtrics and Survey-to-Go, and update content on the website.

This is a two-year appointment with the opportunity to renew for up to three additional years.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Statistics or related field with 2 years of experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience;
  • Training and experience in statistical inference;
  • Experience working with large data sets;
  • The ideal candidate has strong coding fundamentals and wants to pursue a PhD in the social sciences.

Preferred (but not required)

  • Experience with web scraping
  • Experience with machine learning
  • Experience with GIS data
  • Experience with impact evaluation projects (e.g., randomized control trials or matched control design)
