Overview:

Our Emerging Technologies & Computing Team (ETCT) is hiring a Senior Data Engineer to provide scientific support for multiple protected data research projects! ETCT is in the Research Computing Division of ORNL’s Information Technology Services Directorate.

 

We work with the sponsors and researchers to develop, deliver, and maintain data pipelines and machine learning (ML) models. The KDI program serves to facilitate research activities on data that has been entrusted to ORNL by the U.S Department of Veteran’s Affairs (VA), National Cancer Institute (NCI), and other agencies. As such, you will work on some of the most ambitious and impactful research and development programs in healthcare informatics, bioinformatics, and computer science.

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with experts in science, health informatics, and artificial intelligence arenas.
  • Build and launch new data/study marts and data models for the major national research programs.
  • Develop high performance data architectures in a highly secured research environment.
  • Work on a variety of data assignments; collaborate with scientists and engineers and expect to produce reliable data products and systems.

Basic Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Mathematics, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related field of study and 8 - 12 years’ proven experience is required. An overall combination of equivalent experience may be considered.
  • Experienced in ML for data science, statistics, and data visualization in a highly secure environment.
  • Python workflow development.
  • Programming experience in languages and technologies like Scala, Python, PySpark, NLP, XGBoot, Deltalake, Bash, Docker, Airflow, C, distributed computing, Java, and Rust.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A Master’s degree in Engineering, Mathematics, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related field of study with 7-10 years’ proven experience OR a PhD in the same areas of study with 4-6 years’ proven experience.
  • 10+ years of advanced, proven experience in SQL, programming, and scripting languages like Python or Scala.
  • Experience with simulations, distributed computing, and ML.
  • Experience in crafting big data analytics data systems and pipelines.
  • Framework experience like Scala and Spark.
  • Experience with SQL and NoSQL architectures and tools.
  • Experience with healthcare informatics.
  • Prior experience working with VA CDW.

This position requires the ability to acquire and maintain an HSPD-12 PIV badge.
