Job-Specific Responsibilities

The role will perform the following functions:
  • Lead design discussions and document design
  • Work closely with functional users to build a data solution
  • Collaborate with report and ETL developers in communicating design
  • Assess various tools for data analytics and integration
  • Ability to lead team through pressure situations
  • Develop standards and champion them
  • Contribute to improve maturity model from project level to department level and eventually enterprise level

Typical Core Duties

  • Lead aspects of data management services which may include database and analytics platform research and design, database performance and optimization, recovery/load strategy and implementation, and data modeling
  • Collaborate to prepare data verification and testing methods for data/applications loaded into the warehouse, or other data repositories, to ensure compatibility across different sources
  • Code, develop, and document complex scripts integration mappings and workflows, and stored procedures
  • Provide technical expertise and direction in developing and supporting system level programs
  • Troubleshoot advanced data problems and recommend appropriate action
  • Create new or enhanced components of data architecture and interfaces
  • Collaborate with business partners to determine needs and evaluate solutions
  • Provide training to clients and staff
  • May function as subject matter expert or project lead
  • Actively contribute to formulation of plans and policies
  • Abide by and follow the Harvard University IT technical standards, policies and Code of Conduct

Basic Qualifications

  • Minimum of five years’ post-secondary education or relevant work experience

Additional Qualifications and Skills

  • Familiarity with modern data warehouses
  • Familiarity with master data, data governance concepts
  • Data architecture and data integration in the analytics space
  • Data solutioning through interviews, analysis and conducting discovery and design meetings
  • Data modeling and data flow diagraming
  • Liaise with functional users on design decisions and expectation
  • Lead the design efforts in a matrixed team of functional user, ETL and report developers
  • Thorough understanding of OLTP and DW design
  • Must have an experience of full life cycle design and delivery of at least one Data warehouse
  • Analytical and critical design thinking
  • Strong SQL skills, performance tuning and reading explain plan
  • Strong understanding of how ETL works and recommending optimal physical design tuned for ETL tool
  • Understanding of various reporting tools like OAS, Qlik and recommend design

Certificates and Licenses

  • Completion of Harvard IT Academy specified foundational courses (or external equivalent) preferred

Working Conditions

Interview and onboarding activity for this position may be conducted via telephone & Zoom video conferencing, based on the department’s current presence on campus.

Harvard is an on-campus community and all positions are based in Massachusetts. We currently expect that employees in HUIT will work remotely through Fall, 2021. Effective October 1st, as a condition of continued employment, all work must be performed in a state where Harvard is registered to do business (CA, CT, MA, MD, ME, NH, NY, RI, VT).

HUIT is currently developing hybrid workplace models which actively support remote work (within a Harvard registered state) where business and team needs allow. Any remote scheduling of your work, agreed to by your supervisor, will need to be in a state in which Harvard is registered as an employer as a condition of continued employment.  Individual flexible and remote work options for this role will may discussed during the interview process.
