The University of Arizona Cancer Center (UACC) Senior Data Analyst supports the Cancer Center in every facet of non-clinical operations related to the Center's National Cancer Institute (NCI) designation. Every five years, the UACC competes for this designation by applying for the Cancer Center Support Grant (CCSG), or NCI P30. The core objective of this position is continuous research performance assessment, i.e., turning data into critical information and knowledge that helps drive sound decision-making to achieve the Cancer Center's goal of scientific advancement and impact.

This position reports to the Associate Director (AD) of Administration and supports Cancer Center Leadership by not only maintaining compliance but taking it further by developing and implementing innovative metrics of research performance, analysis and reporting, and developing data visualizations, including dashboards. This includes accounting, cataloging, analysis, compliance, and data visualization of the Center's activities, to meet NCI and UACC reporting needs.

The Senior Data Analyst must have a high level of knowledge and understanding of extramural funding and peer-review publishing in a medical research environment. Attention to detail and strong commitment to quality are a must at every level of this work. The position requires technical skills, working in various databases and other software, and continuous improvement through process change or technological advances.

Duties & Responsibilities

Manage and maintain the Cancer Center's Data Warehouse (Research Logix) and the associated business intelligence environments.  

  • Maintain current CCSG component data including membership, funding and publications. 
  • Maintain membership information as described in the Cancer Center's membership policy and as instructed by Cancer Center Leadership. 
  • Track internal and external funding and grant parameters as required by the NCI and as requested by other administrators. 
  • Support the AD of Administration in the maintenance of operational information of the Center's instrumentation labs, cores, and shared resources. 
  • Perform data cleaning. Monitor and resolve critical issues to ensure data quality and data integrity.
  • Support internal pilot project award administration, and limited funding opportunity announcements.

Identify business intelligence, reporting, and data analysis needs on the various Cancer Center Support Grant (CCSG) and research programs to produce actionable information.

  • Collect, compile, manipulate, and analyze data from various sources related to program administration. 
  • Report on member participation and engagement statistics. 
  • Collect grant award information from University Resources, Federal Databases, and department officials from across the UA. 
  • Mining of PubMed and other federal databases to export members' publications and enter in the Cancer Center database. 
  • Working with clinical services administration for Oncore reporting needs.

Identify data patterns and trends, and provide insights to enhance decision making capability in support of the Cancer Center objectives and priorities.

  • Develop and maintain metric reports and dashboards. 
  • Utilize data visualization programs (i.e. Power BI, SQL, Domo) to create graphic presentation of data.
  • Provide analytical reports to the AD of Administration and Cancer Center Leadership.
  • Recommends actions to Leadership for future developments & strategic institutional opportunities.

Serves as a primary contact for internal and/or external stakeholders to coordinate activities, exchange information, deliver reports, etc. 

  • Work with PIs, University of Arizona Health Science Research Administrators, sponsored projects, and other University personnel to ensure all information produced in the office is accurate. 
  • Work with investigators receiving direct cost support from the CCSG (CCSG developmental funds, CCSG supplements, and CCSG Shared Resources) to ensure public access policy compliance in publications arising from these funds.
  • Develops and monitors project plans including timelines, resource requirements, and budgets. 
  • Drafts program sponsor and other technical reports.
  • Support other CCSG deliverables during competing and non-competing renewals. 
  • May provide training and direction to relevant Cancer Center staff. 
  • Additional duties may be assigned.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Understanding of federal grant nomenclature, national institute structure, peer-review publications, and peer review grant award procedures.
  • Ability to solve problems by researching and identifying the core source of misconceptions or misunderstandings.
  • Ability to perform data collection, entry, and data management and transformation with an outstanding degree of accuracy.
  • Excellent knowledge of Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Power BI, and other reporting and data management tools.
  • Strong analytic skills and attention to detail required.
  • Skilled in research and data analysis, drawing actionable insights from raw data and information.
  • Excellent time management and prioritization skills; ability to manage multiple projects and priorities and meet timelines with high quality deliverables.
  • Creative and innovative problem-solving skills.
  • Self-motivated and proactive.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent advanced learning attained through professional level experience required.
  • Minimum of 8 years of relevant work experience, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's in Public Health (MPH), Management Information Systems (MIS), Data Science, Medical or Research, or related field.
  • Experience with utilizing data visualization tools to develop graphic metric reporting.
  • Experience and understanding of Oncore.
  • Experience in CCSG grant reporting and renewal requirements.
