Position Highlights

The Broadening Participation in STEM Senior Coordinator will work independently to support the inclusion education efforts of the New Frontiers of Sound (NewFoS) Science Technology Center (STC). Newly funded by the National Science Foundation and led by UArizona’s College of Engineering, the center researches the emergent and growing field of topological acoustics.

The Senior Coordinator will be supervised by the NewFoS Education and Broadening Participation (EBP) Director. They will work collaboratively with the education team and researchers at all institutions. The Center seeks applicants who have direct experience working on Inclusive Excellence/DEI program design and training and supporting and mentoring minoritized student populations. The applicant should be committed to understanding the systemic causes of underrepresentation in STEM.

Extensive knowledge and use of diversity, equity and inclusion principles, theories and concepts. As a new emergent center, the applicant we seek will be creative and work collaboratively to develop new approaches or techniques in support of Broadening Participation of students and faculty in STEM.

Background on Center: The Broadening Participation in STEM Senior Coordinator will support the inclusion education efforts of the New Frontiers of Sound (NewFoS) Science Technology Center (STC). Newly funded by the National Science Foundation and led by UArizona’s College of Engineering, the center researches the emergent and growing field of topological acoustics. At NewFoS, we see this as an opportunity to create an inclusive center that is nurturing, respectful, and diverse to unleash the creativity of learners in topological acoustics research. Our goal is to model an equitable and future-facing environment in all NewFoS labs, classes, and cross-institutional collaborations by enhancing learning opportunities that foster engagement, respect, and innovation. The Center will be coordinating and supporting multiple educational programs across the center’s university partners: CalTech, CUNY, the UC-Boulder, Georgia Tech, Spelman College, UCLA, ASU, UAlaska-Fairbanks, and Wayne State University.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Education Learning: Lead and design the implementation of the Center’s complex broadening participation activities and programs to advance the faculty, staff, and students’ understanding of inclusive STEM learning. This includes the efforts per the Research Experience and Mentoring undergraduate program, supporting the Equity and Inclusion training, and the curriculum seminar course. Have subject matter expertise in diversity, equity and inclusion principles, theories and concepts to support STEM inclusive curriculum content.
  • Program Execution: Lead all center broadening participation efforts among NewFoS internal and external partners and stakeholders in operationalizing strategic actions, policies, and priorities to ensure successful implementation and accountability of education, activities and programs. Direct in-person and virtual debriefs with undergraduate students.
  • Data Capture: Capture and maintain record of center-wide education activity data, such as presentations, publications, patents, etc. for website upload and dissemination efforts. Utilize evaluation data to interpret and make strategic decisions about program design and execution in support of program goals and outcomes. 
  • Collaboration Within and Across Center Teams: Collaborate with the Senior Education Coordinator (and the education initiatives under their coordination) and with center-wide campus partners in the design and review of inclusion-related policies, strategies, and initiatives in educational activities and learning spaces. Co-manage undergraduate advisory board.

Knowledge, Skill and Abilities:

  • Education Programmatic Design: Knowledge of inclusive leadership training design, development, and methodologies in STEM contexts; development of inclusive learning activities (including digital) and lessons; and writing for both formal and informal learning spaces. Deliver effective, interactive, high-impact learning programs, as needed
  • Communication: Strong facilitation and presentation skills. Takes an interest in new ways to communicate science information using technology and emergent learning tools like AI. Strong documentation, story-telling, and technical writing skills. 
  • Mentoring: Strong Background in mentoring minoritized students in STEM career pathways. Experience in creating inclusive learning spaces and experiences for students, faculty, and staff.
  • Team/Office Organization: Ability to develop web-based content (such as web page content). Record and disseminate minutes during all meetings, including virtual. High degree of emotional intelligence, problem-solving skills, communication skills and ability to work effectively in a fast paced environment while under pressure and in a variety of situations.
  • Relationship Building: Ability to build relationships and trust across diverse experiences, identities, and positions through cultural awareness, sensitivity, and humility. Responsible, organized, and service oriented to lead intergroup coordination across five time zones in the execution of multiple programs. Collaborative style and ability to accomplish goals through working with a variety of people.
  • Subject matter expertise in diversity, equity and inclusion principles, theories and concepts.
  • High level of integrity, confidentiality, and professionalism.
  • Self-motivated, able to alternate easily between working independently and on a team.
  • Understanding and appreciation of key issues confronting groups that have been marginalized.
  • Proficient in implementing and analyzing survey tools.
  • Ability to gather information through informal chats and discussions.
  • Proficient in using data management tools (i.e. Smartsheets) and Microsoft Office Suites, Teams, and OneDrive, etc.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in an appropriate field AND five years related work experience in program and training development, OR any equivalent combination of education work, social work, and experience.
  • Direct experience working on educational program design, lesson writing, STEM education, and working with minoritized communities.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience managing virtual platforms, such as Zoom, Slack, Discord, Google Classroom, etc.
  • Experience in communicating with management and leadership, and other key stakeholders about broadening participation and education priorities for successful implementation.
